PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Shay Maloney scored two goals to put the Brown women's hockey team in front on two occasions, but a trio of third period goals from Providence helped the Friars rally past Brown 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in the battle for the Mayor's Cup at Meehan Auditorium.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Maloney's fourth and fifth goals of the season moved her into the team lead in goals and points (8).
- Maloney posted a game-high seven shots on goal.
- Anna Shelden and Abby Hancock assisted on Maloney's first goal, while Madie Stockfish and Anna Gallagher each assisted on the second goal, which put Brown on top 2-1 in the second period.
- Providence outshot Brown 35-19 in the game.
- The Bears were 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maloney gave the Bears a 1-0 lead at 9:59 of the opening period on a beautiful individual effort, skating in 1-on-4 down the side wall, circling behind the back of the net and wrapping it around the left post and in for a beautiful wrap-around goal.
- The Friars tied things up with 36 seconds left in the period. After an initial shot from the blue line was blocked, Ashlynn Garnett jumped on the loose puck in front and knocked it into the net for the equalizer.
- Maloney nearly gave the Bears the lead back with just over 12 minutes to go in the period, but her breakaway shot rang off the post.
- Maloney struck again to put Brown back in front 2-1 at the 8:06 mark of the second period. Stockfish fed a pass down to Maloney in the low slot, and she deked around the goaltender and slid it between the right post and the goaltender's skate for the go-ahead tally.
- Still holding a one-goal lead early in the third, Brown killed off a minor penalty thanks in part to three blocked shots by Meadow Carman.
- The Friars later took the lead with a pair of goals in a 52-second span at 5:37 and 6:29 on shots from in front. Providence added an insurance goal with exactly four minutes remaining and held off Brown for the 4-2 final.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: MELANIE RUZZI
- "Turnovers got us into trouble. Our defense got caught up ice, and we turned the puck over and they pounced on the mistakes that we made. This one hurts because it would have been a big win for our program, and I thought we played very well with the exception of the few mistakes that we made, and they're a good team and they capitalized on those mistakes."
- "The offense we generated today was really good. The energy and grit we showed was exceptional. Our forecheck was all over them and we gave them trouble getting the puck out clean. Shay put the team on her back in a big moment. We didn't get the win, but I want to honor the fact that our seniors wanted that very badly and they brought their very best today."
Brown will hit the road for a pair road games before the holiday break, starting on Thursday, Dec. 2 at Saint Anselm.
