WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Brown earned a 72-68 win over Hartford on Tuesday with a hot-shooting second half and a career-day from Mya Murray.
Murray led Brown with 21 points on 9-for-10 shooting, becoming the first Bear to hit the 20-point mark this season. Murray also went 2-for-2 from three. The sophomore finished the game with six rebounds and had five blocks for the second-straight game.
"I know she scored the ball well and she had some really big plays but the five blocks are what I have been waiting for from her," said head coach Monique LeBlanc. "She is agile enough and has the hops to do that and we need that defensive presence inside. She is still learning at this level how to block shots and it is great to see her take some strides there."
Isabella Mauricio and Charlotte Jewell each finished with 15 points. Kyla Jones and Amanda Latkany each give the Bears nine points.
Mauricio hit five threes for the Bears as Brown went 11-for-29 from deep, the best performance from beyond the arc this year. Mauricio also handed out a career-high eight assists as the Bears handed out a season-high 20 assists on the night.
Jewell filled up the stat sheet with four assists and three rebounds, going 5-for-6 from the free throw line, including two free throws with less than a second in the game to clinch the win.
Jones led the Brown defense with five steals, while added five rebounds and four assists.
The Bears had a four-point lead going into halftime and the offense caught fire in the second half. Brown shot over 50 percent from the floor in the second half and was 8-for-15 from three, including a 6-for-9 performance from deep in the third quarter.
After Hartford cut the lead to three, Mauricio hit her first three of the quarter to push it back to six. Jones picked up a steal which turned into another Brown three, this one by Jewell, to push the lead to nine and force a timeout.
Hartford came out of the timeout with a three but Mauricio responded with a three of her own. The lead shrunk to three at 40-37 but Jewell hit her second three of the quarter and after a basket by Hartford, Mauricio hit another three as the Bears started the third 5-for-6 from deep.
Later in the quarter, after an offensive rebound, Murray hit a three to keep Hartford at bay and after two free throws from Jewell, Brown was up 51-44 heading to the final quarter.
The fourth quarter started with a three by Hartford but Mauricio responded with her fifth three of the night. Hartford cut the lead to two with a run but the Bears went right back to Murray who picked up a layup to end the run. The Bears extended the lead on a fast break layup by Murray off a nice pass by Jones.
An offensive rebound by Jones a few minutes later pushed the Brown lead to eight. With 3:13 left in the game Murray pushed Brown's lead to 11 with a three to beat the shot clock expiring. Hartford hit two three to cut the lead to five but the Bears put the game away from the free throw line. Brown went 6-for-7 from the free throw line to hold off any run by the Hawks.
Brown will head to Vermont for the weekend to compete in the TD Bank Classic with the first game against the host Catamounts on Saturday (Nov. 27) at 12 p.m.
