BURLINGTON, Vt. – Brown fell to Vermont in the first round of the TD Bank Classic, 79-46, on Saturday (Nov. 27). The Bears were led by Bella Mauricio who finished the game with 13 points.
Mauricio was the lone Bear to reach double figures. Charlotte Jewell finished the game with eight points and Kyla Jones added six.
Brown (2-5) struggled from the floor, shooting 30 percent and just 18 from three-point range (4-for-22). The Bears held a 39-33 advantage on the boards, led by Amanda Latkany with eight. Jones finished the game with six rebounds and also led the team with three steals.
The Bears pulled down 16 offensive rebounds but turned those in to just two second-chance points. Turnovers doomed the Bears with Brown committing 24 on the day and Vermont turning those turnovers in to 29 points.
The offensive struggles, combined with Vermont shooting 53 percent from the floor led to an early hole for the Bears. Vermont (2-3) led 18-7 after the first quarter, shooting 66 percent from the floor and holding the Bears to just 17 percent.
The Bears did not have an answer for Josie Larkins in the first half as Larkins scored 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting from three-point range. Vermont used a 13-0 lead spreading between the first and second quarters to take a 22-7 lead before Jewell hit a three. Mauricio scored the next four points for the Bears but Vermont would push its lead to 18 with just over two minutes left in the quarter. Jones hit a layup and Mauricio added a three with under a minute left in the half, making the deficit 16 at the half.
Murray picked up her fourth foul with 7:13 left in the third quarter and Vermont took advantage of her missed presence shooting 66 percent in the quarter and outscoring the Bears 26-11 in the frame. Emma Laszewski closed out the quarter with a buzzer beating three for the Bears for her first-career basket. Gianna Aiello added three points in the fourth quarter for Brown.
Brown will finish up play at the TD Bank Classic at 11 a.m. on Sunday (Nov. 27). The Bears will take on the loser of the North Dakota versus Bucknell.
