ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown women's soccer team defeated Cornell 3-0 Saturday afternoon to improve to 5-0 in Ivy League action and 10-3 on the year.
"I'm happy with the result today and the fact that we were able to get three points on the road," head coach Kia McNeill said. "Cornell's record is not indicative of how good they are as a team, so it was important for us to show up with the same intensity and focus as we have had in our previous Ivy games.
"It was great that we were able to get a lot of players minutes and experience in an Ivy game. Having that depth on our team is really critical this time of year."
Ava Seelenfreund started the scoring in the 17th minute. A long throw in by Maesyn G'Bye was deflected back out to her by the Big Red defense. G'Bye was able to collect it and send a cross into the box that Seelenfreund knocked home.
Brown held an advantage in shots at 9-2 at halftime, but Seelenfreund's strike was the only of the first 45.
The Bears opened the second half about as well as you could hope as Raphino doubled the lead just three and a half minutes in. From well outside the 18-yard box, she sent a shot on goal that found the top left corner of the net.
Barely three minutes later, G'Bye made it 3-0 when she received a pass from Raphino at point-blank range and did not disappoint.
On the day, Brown outshot Cornell 16-6, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Bears also earned seven corners to the Big Red's two.
Kayla Thompson made two saves in goal to pick up the shutout.
"It will be a joyful bus ride back home," McNeill said. "And then we will look to prepare for the upcoming games this week."
The Bears will play their final nonconference game of the season Tuesday, Oct. 26 at home against LIU before returning to Ivy League action when they host Penn on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
