WILMINGTON, N.C. – Sophomore Lauren Innerst went 4-for-5 at the plate and pitched 5.0 innings, and freshman Erin Elgas threw 2.0 innings of shutout relief as Brown University softball topped tournament host UNC Wilmington, 12-3, at the Tournament by the Beach on Friday afternoon at Boseman Field on Opening Day.
With the score tied at 3-3 after four innings, the Bears (1-0) outscored the host Seahawks (1-9), 9-0, over the final three frames to earn the victory in their first outing of 2020.
"First game out – we got out to a slow start, but I'm proud of the adjustments we made after the first time through the lineup," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We started getting more aggressive and didn't let off the gas pedal after that. We hope to build off of that tomorrow and get better each game down here."
Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) finished 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and a run, while tossing 5.0 innings in the win and allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Junior Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) tallied three RBIs, two runs, and a double while sophomore Kat Clum (Fort Worth, Texas) and freshman Julia Gubner (Calabasas, Calif.) each drove in two runs. Juniors Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) and Katie O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) and freshman Meghan Gormley (North Kingstown, R.I.) all scored two runs apiece.
Elgas (Belgrade, Mont.) made her first collegiate appearance, hurling 2.0 innings and permitting no runs on two hits with four strikeouts.
"Erin Elgas had a tremendous first outing," Refsnyder said. "She was able to keep batters guessing and close out the win."
After the Seahawks scored the game's first two runs in the bottom of the second, Brown responded with three runs in the top of the fourth to pull ahead, 3-2. Chavarria, Clum, and sophomore Elayna Tsiouplis (Langhorne, Pa.) each drove in a run in the frame.
Following a run for UNCW in the last of the fourth, the Bears plated four runs in the top of the fifth, moving ahead 7-3. Gubner drove in two runs in the stanza while O'Leary and Chavarria each added an RBI. An RBI single from Innerst gave the Bears an 8-3 edge in the top of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, Brown registered four more runs, capturing a 12-3 advantage. Chavarria, Clum, and Innerst all brought in runs in the final frame.
For UNCW, Janel Gamache took the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits with four strikeouts. The Seahawks' Gabriella Hessenthaler went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
