Softball Opens 2020 Campaign at Tournament by the Beach in North Carolina

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University softball opens its 2020 campaign with six games at the Tournament by the Beach hosted by UNC Wilmington, as the Bears square off against host UNCW (Feb. 21, 3:00 p.m.), George Washington (Feb. 21, 5:30 p.m.), UNCW (Feb. 22, 10:00 a.m.), Eastern Kentucky (Feb. 22, 5:30 p.m.), EKU (Feb. 23, 10:00 a.m.), and UNCW (Feb. 23, 12:30 p.m.).

ALL-IVY INNERST
An Honorable Mention All-Ivy selection last year, sophomore pitcher Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) ranked third in the Ivy League in strikeouts (70), first in strikeouts caught looking (29), seventh in ERA (3.02), and seventh in innings pitched (109.0). During conference play, the two-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week stood second in the Ancient Eight in strikeouts (44), second in strikeouts caught looking (14), fourth in innings pitched (69.2), and ninth in ERA (3.32).
WATERS IN THE CIRCLE
Senior pitcher Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) has pitched 235.0 innings in her career and has appeared in 64 career games. As a junior, she ranked eighth in the Ivy League in innings pitched (108.0) and ninth in strikeouts caught looking (16), while posting a 4.54 ERA and 36 strikeouts. A three-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete honoree, she posted a 4.33 ERA over 97.0 innings as a sophomore.
CRANFORD BEHIND THE PLATE
Junior catcher Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) earned Ivy League Player of the Week twice last season and won the team's Most Improved award. She ranked sixth in the Ivy League in batting average (.368), third in slugging percentage (.644), and 10th in stolen bases (10), while leading the team in all three categories as well as on-base percentage (.439). She stood second on the club in runs (15), hits (32), doubles (seven), home runs (five), RBIs (16), and walks (10).
OKIMOTO RETURNS
Senior shortstop Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) started all 84 of the Bears' games at shortstop over her first two seasons before missing the majority of her junior year due to injury. As a sophomore, she led the team in runs (21) and ranked third on the team in hits (36) and doubles (six). As a freshman she paced the team in runs (33), walks (22), and on-base percentage (.423), while ranking second on the team in batting average (.326), hits (45), home runs (six), RBIs (25), and stolen bases (four).
THE CAPTAINS
Senior shortstop Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) and senior pitcher Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) will serve as the program's captains for the 2020 season. Okimoto will act as a captain for the Bears for the second straight year.
THE NEWCOMERS
Brown will welcome six incoming freshmen to the program for the 2020 season as part of its Class of 2023. Brown's Class of 2023 includes pitcher Erin Elgas (Belgrade, Montana), infielder Meghan Gormley (North Kingstown, R.I.), catcher/utility Julia Gubner (Calabasas, Calif.), first base/catcher Jadey Hagiwara (Honolulu, Hawaii), utility Nicole Kim (San Diego, Calif.), and pitcher/outfielder Lauren Long (Southlake, Texas).
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
UNC Wilmington has opened the season with a 1-8 record after going 26-28 a season ago. Janel Gamache leads the Seahawks with a .438 average while Morgan Britt paces the team's pitching staff with a 4.38 ERA.
George Washington has started the year with a 1-9 mark after going 44-18 in 2019. Priscilla Martinez paces the Colonials with a .318 average while Mia Parker has tallied a 2.10 ERA.
Eastern Kentucky has begun the year with a 7-2 record after posting a 35-22 mark in 2019. Sammi Miller leads the Colonels with a .444 average, and Mollie Paulick paces the club with a 2.08 ERA.
