
Softball Falls to UNCW, Eastern Kentucky on Day Two in North Carolina

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Brown University softball fell to the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, 7-0, and Eastern Kentucky University, 9-1, in its second day of competition at UNCW's Tournament by the Beach on Saturday at Boseman Field.
The Bears (1-2) split the weekend series with the host Seahawks (2-9), 1-1, prior to dropping a decision to the Colonels (9-3), in their second game of the day.
"We had a better approach at the plate in game two," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "Our pitchers are pitching well enough to win, but our defense needs to clean some things up. We'll look to learn from the mistakes we made today and have a better outing tomorrow."
Freshman pitcher Erin Elgas (Belgrade, Mont.) allowed just two earned runs over 7.0 innings between the two games, including a complete-game 6.0 innings against EKU. Sophomore Madeline Charles (Fillmore, Calif.) went 2-for-2 against the Colonels.
Next, Brown concludes play at the tournament tomorrow – Sunday, Feb. 23 – against George Washington (9:30 a.m.) and Eastern Kentucky (12:00 p.m.).
Game 1: UNCW 7, Brown 0
Freshman Nicole Kim reached base twice, and freshman Erin Elgas threw an inning of scoreless relief, but Brown fell to UNC Wilmington, 7-0, on Saturday morning in its first game of the day and second game at the Tournament by the Beach.
The Bears topped the Seahawks, 12-3, yesterday afternoon, but the hosts evened the weekend series at 1-1 with their shutout victory.
Kim (San Diego, Calif.) reached base with a single and a walk while junior Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) added a single.
Elgas (Belgrade, Mont.) did not allow a run in 1.0 inning and tallied a strikeout. Senior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) tossed 3.0 innings in the start, permitting three runs – two earned – on six hits with one strikeout.
For UNCW, Rylee Pate captured the shutout win, hurling a complete-game 7.0 innings and giving up two hits with six strikeouts. Rachel Willis went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs, and Dominique Travers finished 3-for-3.
The Seahawks took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run from Willis highlighting the inning. UNCW added two more runs in the last of the fourth and another pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Game 2: Eastern Kentucky 9, Brown 1 (6 Innings)

Charles (Fillmore, Calif.) led the Bears at the plate with her 2-for-2 effort while junior Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) and sophomore Kat Clum (Fort Worth, Texas) each posted a double. Sophomore Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) drove in the Bears' run.
