Providence, R.I. - Senior attackman Luke McCaleb (Chevy Chase, MD) scored four goals and junior middie Ryan Aughavin (Glen Head, NY) registered a natural hat-trick to lead Brown to a 20-7 win over Sacred Heart Tuesday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field and the opening of the new Center for Lacrosse and Soccer.
"I really like our team and I'm proud of this group," said head coach Mike Daly. "Our face-off unit did a good job, allowing us to go on runs. It's a lot easier to coach when you're making stops and scoring goals."
McCaleb added two assists to go with his four goals for six points. Aughavin's three consecutive goals came late in the third quarter and into the fourth quarter, while also adding two assists.
Bears' sophomore Darian Cook (Redding, CT), senior Jack Kniffin (Darien, CT), junior Connor Fox (Boulder, CO) and freshman Logan Paff (Towson, MD) scored two goals each.
Senior All-American goalie Phil Goss (San Francisco, CA) made all 11 of his saves through three quarters and allowed just five goals.
Drew Edwards paced the Pioneers with two goals.
Brown had a decisive advantage in the face-off x, winning 16-of-28 face-offs. Senior Jason Simaan (Newport Beach, CA) won 4-of-6 face-offs, freshman Matt Gunty (Bethesda, MD) captured 6-of-10 face-offs and junior Matt McShea (Winnetka, IL) earned 6-of-12 face-off wins.
The Bears also caused 15 Sacred Heart turnovers with sophomores Luke Gaydos (Ridgefield, CT) and Andrew Geppert (Dover, NH) causing three turnovers each. Brown also had a 38-26 advantage in ground balls, led by junior Adrian Enchill (Pittsfield, MA) with five ground balls.
Trailing 2-1 early in the game, McCaleb tied the score, and Kniffin gave Brown the lead for good, 3-2, igniting a 7-0 Brown run that translated into an 8-2 Brown lead on Kniffin's second goal with 10:20 left in the second quarter.
The Bears held an 11-3 lead at the half following a behind-the-back goal by McCaleb with three seconds remaining.
Sacred Heart opened the second half with a goal by Jack Walsh to trail 11-5.
Once again, Brown answered with nine straight goals with Paff giving the Bears their largest lead, 20-5, with 5:51 left in the game.
After two straight home games, the Bears will be on the road on Saturday, February 22, traveling to Long Island to battle Stony Brook. Face-off at LaValle Stadium is 1:00 pm.
