First Half Surge Lifts Men’s Lacrosse Past UMass Lowell, 13-6

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown men's lacrosse team (4-3, 0-1) used a strong first half to defeat UMass Lowell (2-5, 0-1), 13-6, on Tuesday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Marcus Wertheim led the way offensively for Brown with four goals, Jeremy Hopsicker chipped in with his second-straight hat trick. After tallying a career-high four points in the Bears' last outing, Jameson Steele followed up that effort with two goals and two assists.
Connor Foley made 12 saves in the win while collecting a game-high six ground balls. As a team, the Bears outshot the River Hawks 44-29.
Brown opened the game on a 3-0 run on goals from Wertheim, Ennis Udo, and Hopsicker before UMass Lowell got on the board. After the goal from the River Hawks, the Bears responded with goals from Steele and Hopsicker to take a 5-1 lead into the second quarter. The Bears outshot the River Hawks 22-4 (12-3 on goal) in the first quarter and caused four turnovers.
After the River Hawks opened the second quarter with a goal, the Bears responded with three-straight goals from Wertheim, PJ Behan, and Brady O'Kane, the stretch gave Brown an 8-2 advantage before UMass Lowell ended the run with a goal.
Ben Scandone added Brown's ninth goal of the first half with 21 seconds left, giving the Bears a 9-3 advantage heading into the second half.
Each team found the back of the net once in the third quarter as Wertheim completed his hat trick, Brown took a 10-4 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
Brown outscored UMass Lowell 3-2 in the fourth quarter behind goals from Hopsicker, Wertheim, and Steele to earn the victory.
Brown will travel to Queens, N.Y. to take on St. John's on Saturday, Mar. 21, the opening face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
