POTSDAM, N.Y. – Colin Burston (Winnipeg, Manitoba) provided a third-period goal, but it was not enough to erase a three-goal deficit, as the Brown men's hockey team fell at No. 6 Clarkson, 4-1, in ECAC action at Cheel Arena.
Brown (5-16-0, 5-9-0 ECAC) split the weekend trip after a shutout win at St. Lawrence on Friday. Clarkson improved to 19-6-2, 12-3-0.
Josh Dunne and Zach Tsekos had two goals apiece for the Golden Knights. Senior Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 27 saves in net for the Bears, while Frank Marotte had 25 stops.
"They scored two power-play goals and we were shutout," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I did like our push back and how hard we played. We had enough opportunities to really make that a little bit of a closer game, but proud of the way the guys responded being down."
Clarkson raced out to an early lead with a power-play goal at 4:03 when Dunne ripped a shot that was deflected by Nieto but trickled over the goal line. Tsekos made it a two-goal lead at 17:44 of the period as he tipped home a centering pass in front.
Dunne notched his second goal of the night with another power-play tally 3:46 into the middle period to push the home side in front, 3-0. Brown then generated a pair of quality shots on the power play one minute later, including a good look from Cole Quisenberry (Denver, Colo.) in front, but Marotte denied both bids to keep the Bears off the board.
Burston put the Bears on the board at 7:28 in the third period. Connor Marshall (Parkland, Fla.) directed a pass into the offensive end, where Burston scooped up the puck and rifled a shot over the shoulder of Marotte for his first of the season. Rookie defenseman Samuli Niinisaari (Hamina, Finland) also earned an assist.
Brown outshot Clarkson by a 10-6 margin in the third period as the Bears continued to generate scoring opportunities, but after Nieto was pulled for the extra skater with 3:06 remaining, Tsekos netted the empty netter to secure the win.
Senior defenseman Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) led the Bears with five shots.
Brown will host Princeton and Quinnipiac at Meehan next weekend.
