Men’s Hockey Tripped Up in Overtime by No. 15 Arizona State, 4-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's hockey team scored three times early in the second period, but No. 15 Arizona State notched four unanswered goals, as the Bears fell in overtime, 4-3, to close out the two-game weekend series at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown moved to 3-14-0 on the season, while ASU improved to 13-8-3.
Rookies Nathan Plessis (Salmon Arm, British Columbia) and Connor Marshall (Parkland, Fla.) and senior Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) provided the goals for the Bears, while Marshall added an assist for the two-point night.
Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had 28 saves for the Bears. Max Prawdzik earned the won for the Sun Devils after he replaced Evan DeBrouwer in the second period. Johnny Walker scored twice for ASU.
"That's a hard loss, but we have to find a way to recover," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We had some good chances, even in overtime, but it's just one of those stretches. You have to find a way, when you're up 3-0 at home, to win a hockey game."
The two teams played to a scoreless opening period as Arizona State won the battle for shots, 11-7, while Brown hit a pair of posts in the frame.
Brown exploded for three goals in a 2:22 span in the opening five minutes of the middle period. Plessis started it off at 2:02 when he tapped home a feed from fellow rookie Marshall for his second of the season.
Beaudoin then added his second goal of the weekend as he cleaned up a rebound in front for the two-goal lead. Trey Dodd (St. Louis, Mo.) and Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) collected the assists on the play.
Marshall closed out the three-goal stretch with his first career collegiate goal and second point of the period. After a shot from Dorian Dawson (Collingwood, Ontario) went just wide of the net, Marshall was set up on the goal line, and quickly played the puck off DeBrouwer and into the back of the net. Joachim Weberg (Oslo, Norway) also earned an assist.
Brinson Pasichnuk put the Sun Devils on the board midway through the period to cut the Brown lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes.
ASU carried over its momentum into the third period, as Walker scored twice in the opening half of the frame to even the score at 3-3, sending the game into overtime. The two teams traded opportunities and combined for six shots in the extra frame, but Joshua Maniscalco scored the game winner at 3:34 to secure the weekend sweep.
Brown will return to ECAC play next weekend when it hosts RPI and Union.
