PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore Malina Yago scored a goal in the first half, classmate Claire Myers netted a goal in the second half, and Brown University women's soccer defeated the University of Connecticut, 2-0, on Thursday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (3-0-0) defeated the Huskies (2-2-1) for the first time since 1990 behind a pair of goals from their bench with Yago (Culver City, Calif.) converting in the 43rd minute and Myers (Fairport, N.Y.) finding the back of the net in the 62nd minute.
"We have a lot of home games this year, and it has been important for us to set a precedent that we want to make Stevenson-Pincince Field a tough place to play," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "The fan support helps that as well as the energy that we bring out to the field. We executed the game plan really well. UConn is a good team that will do well in their conference. It was a good team effort and a good team win."
Yago posted her first goal of the season and the second of her career, while registering her first collegiate game-winning goal. Myers followed with her second goal of the season and the fourth goal of her career.
Junior goalkeeper Kayla Thompson (Austin, Texas) totaled four saves in her first collegiate shutout and win (1-0-0) as she made her first start for the Bears since transferring from West Virginia University prior to the season.
Brown's back line of juniors Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) and Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.), sophomore Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.), and freshman Rachyl Francisco (San Jose, Calif.) helped the Bears notch their second clean sheet as a team this season. Cummings and Brown have aided Brown to 13 shutouts during their careers.
"Our biggest point this season is the depth we have coming off the bench," McNeill said. "Claire Myers is playing tremendously, giving us a lot of energy off the bench, and for Malina Yago to get her first goal of the year is well deserved. It's a really important three points for us because historically we would look at UConn as a big-time opponent – which they are – but we have to know that we can play with those teams."
Yago recorded the game's first goal at the 42:11 mark. After sophomore Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) played an in-swinging corner kick into the goal area, Yago knocked the ball into the net during the ensuing scrum inside the six-yard box.
Myers doubled the Bears' edge to 2-0 at 61:15. Following a cross from freshman Brittany Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) into the penalty area, Myers gathered a loose ball and converted on her second attempt after her initial shot was blocked.
Brown created several other scoring chances, including a free kick from senior Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 12th minute. Freshman Ava Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.) almost scored on a counter in the 29th minute while sophomore Zoe Maxwell (Irvington, N.Y.) and junior Star White (Norfolk, Va.) nearly did the same in the 56th and 82nd minutes respectively.
Thompson made a save on a point-blank header in the 72nd minute to maintain the clean sheet.
For the match, Brown led in shots (18-11), shots on goal (10-4), and corner kicks (4-0).
UConn goalkeeper Randi Palacios made eight saves in the loss (2-2-1).
Next, Brown travels to play at No. 13 Texas A&M University on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 7:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. CT (SEC Network+).
