COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Junior goalkeeper Kayla Thompson made six saves and posted her second straight shutout as Brown University women's soccer earned a point in a 0-0, double-overtime draw at No. 13 Texas A&M on Sunday night at Ellis Field.
Making their first-ever trip to the state of Texas, the Bears (3-0-1) held the host Aggies (4-0-2) – the preseason favorites to win the SEC – in check throughout the match and made a significant bid to take the contest at the end of regulation.
"I'm really pleased with the way our team competed for the full 110 minutes," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "We did a great job keeping our defensive shape throughout the game. Everyone from our goalkeeper up through our forwards helped us defend a very dangerous Texas A&M team. We also put numbers forward when we had opportunities and created a few quality scoring chances. It was great for our program to see that we can compete with SEC teams."
With temperatures hovering in the upper 90s, Brown remained undefeated behind a strong defensive effort that blanked Texas A&M – a program that came into the match averaging 2.40 goals per game and has made 24 straight appearances in the NCAA tournament.
Playing in her home state, Thompson (Austin, Texas) made several key stops, including two saves in succession midway through the second half, and snuffed out a final Aggie chance in the game's waning seconds to preserve the tie.
Brown's back four of juniors Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) and Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.), sophomore Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.), and freshman Rachyl Francisco (San Jose, Calif.) – alongside defensive midfielder Sara Bermudez (South San Francisco, Calif.) – made major contributions to the Bears' third consecutive team clean sheet. All five student-athletes played the full 110 minutes.
Thompson came up with three saves in the first half, making a pair of stops off set pieces inside the first 25 minutes and denying another bid off a corner late in the opening period. Cummings generated a pair of chances for Brown in the first 45 minutes, sending a shot high in the 24th minute and playing a free kick into the box in the 34th minute.
Brown again moved forward in the 52nd minute as freshman Brittany Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) carried the ball into the attacking third before classmate Ava Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.) played a dangerous cross into the penalty area, ultimately leading to a corner kick.
Inside of the second half's first 25 minutes, Thompson punched away a cross, made a save on a shot that came from the edge of the six-yard box, and snagged a shot from distance out of the air.
The Bears generated the better of the game's chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation, holding advantages in shots (3-0) and corner kicks (2-0) during that span. As part of the visitors' attempt to take the game in regulation, junior Star White (Norfolk, Va.) played a threatening ball in the 82nd minute, sophomore Zoe Maxwell (Irvington, N.Y.) hit the left post in the 85th minute, and Bermudez sent a shot just wide following a free kick in the 88th minute.
In overtime, Thompson notched one save and closed off one last bid from the Aggies, blocking a shot off a corner kick just before the final buzzer.
Next, Brown enters a three-game homestand with matchups on ESPN+ against Hartford (Sept. 12, 7:00 p.m.), Providence (Sept. 15, 1:00 p.m.), and Fairfield (Sept. 18, 4:00 p.m.).
