Carchio, White Power Women’s Soccer Over Dartmouth in Ivy Opener, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Abby Carchio scored an early goal, junior Star White netted the game-winning goal in the second half, and Brown University women's soccer topped Dartmouth College, 2-1, in both teams' Ivy League opener on Saturday night at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
In a matchup featuring the top two teams in the conference in the NCAA RPI Rankings, the Bears (7-1-1, 1-0-0 Ivy, No. 24 RPI) gained a 1-0 lead on the Big Green (7-2-0, 0-1-0 Ivy, No. 40 RPI) in the seventh minute and broke a 1-1 tie with a goal in the 56th minute on their way to their 10th straight home victory.
"We came out with a lot of energy," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "Abby getting a goal early in the game helped us out tremendously. We were very dangerous in the final third. Brittany Raphino, Ava Seelenfreund, and Star White all played really well. This is what we've been waiting for – for them to all be firing on all cylinders at the same time."
The Bears improved to 7-0-0 at home in 2019, outscoring opponents 17-2, and bettered their record to 10-0-0 in their last 10 home matches dating back to 2018, outscoring opponents 29-3 during that stretch.
"We have five or six players that are very dangerous, and it's hard to mark that many players out of the game," McNeill said. "If we can continue to encourage our team to be aggressive and be confident in the final third, that is going to be difficult for other teams to deal with."
In a contest that featured two of the top five teams in the NCAA in goals-against average, the Bears became the first team this year to score two goals on the Big Green as the visitors had allowed just two goals on the season coming into the game. Brown became the first team to score on Dartmouth since Sept. 6 and snapped a five-game winning streak for the Big Green.
"Playing in this league, the margin for error is so small," McNeill said. "We have really fixated on small mistakes throughout the preseason and our non-conference games to get better for these moments. You could see in the game today that it is a game of inches. The team knows that, and that's why they were able to rally together and get this win."
White (Norfolk, Va.) scored the game-winning goal against Dartmouth for the second time in her career as she also netted the game winner in the Bears' overtime win over Dartmouth in 2017. She scored her third goal of the season, her 13th career goal, and fifth career game-winning goal.
Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) – making her first start since Aug. 30 due to injury – scored her second goal of the season and her 15th career goal.
Junior Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) and freshman Ava Seelenfreund (Truckee, Calif.) each posted one assist. Cummings and Seelenfreund lead the Bears with four assists apiece on the season.
Carchio started the game's scoring just 6:02 into the contest, driving a one-timed shot from inside the penalty area into the left side of the goal. After sophomore Sara Bermudez (South San Francisco, Calif.) played a free kick into the box, a failed clear came to Carchio who found the back of the net with one touch.
White gave the Bears the lead for good with her goal at the 55:12 mark. Cummings initiated the play with a corner kick from the right side before Seelenfreund headed the ball down into the goal area where a waiting White finished off the play.
Brown junior goalkeeper Kayla Thompson (Austin, Texas) made two saves while all six of the Bears' defensive players – Thompson, Cummings, Bermudez junior Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.), sophomore Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.), and freshman Rachyl Francisco (San Jose, Calif.) all played the full 90 minutes in limiting the Big Green to one goal. Cummings and Brown have played all 830 minutes on the season.
Dartmouth equalized at 1-1 in the 35th minute as Erin Kawakami took a pass from Izzy Glennon on a counter, carried the ball into the attacking third, and sent a shot into the net from outside the penalty area.
The Bears nearly added to their score line on several occasions beginning in the 13th minute when freshman Brittany Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) carried the ball into the penalty area for a one-on-one with the keeper before her bid was tipped away.
Brown almost struck in the opening moments of the second half as a shot from Seelenfreund off a through ball from White traveled just wide. In the 56th minute, White came close to a brace with her shot in the box moving over the crossbar.
Thompson kept the Bears in the lead in the 82nd minute as she made a full-extension save, diving to her right.
For the match, Brown held advantages in shots (20-8), shots on goal (7-3), and corner kicks (9-5).
