NEW YORK, N.Y. – Freshman Brittany Raphino scored the contest's game-winning goal in the first half, and sophomore Zoe Maxwell added a goal in the match's waning moments as Brown University women's soccer topped Columbia University, 2-0, on Saturday evening at Commisso Soccer Stadium.
Playing in their first Ivy League road match of the season, the Bears (8-1-1, 2-0-0 Ivy) netted goals in the 34th and 90th minutes on their way to their first win over the Lions (6-3-1, 1-1-0 Ivy) – winners of six of their last seven matches coming into the contest – since 2009.
"I'm really proud of the team and the way we played tonight," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "It's always tough to get a result on the road, especially in the Ivy League, with how much each of these games mean. We knew we had to leave everything on the field to get a result, and that's exactly what we did tonight."
Brown – ranked No. 11 in the NCAA RPI, No. 17 in the Top Drawer Soccer national poll, and No. 3 in the United Soccer Coaches East Region rankings – reversed a streak against the Lions in which Columbia had won the last four match-ups with a goal in the 89th minute or later.
Raphino (Randolph, Mass.) tallied her first collegiate game-winning goal and her fourth goal of the season. She posted an assist on the Bears' second goal for three points in the match and is tied for the team lead with 10 points in 2019.
Maxwell (Irvington, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season and the second goal of her career. Junior Star White (Norfolk, Va.) registered an assist on Raphino's goal, marking her second assist of the year and her 11th career assist.
Junior goalkeeper Kayla Thompson (Austin, Texas) – who entered the weekend ranked fourth in the NCAA in save percentage and sixth in GAA – made three saves in her fifth shutout of the season.
As a team, the Bears – ranked No. 4 in the NCAA in save percentage and No. 6 in GAA – have now compiled seven shutouts in 10 matches. Brown's center back pairing of juniors Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) and Cameron Brown (Portsmouth, Va.) have played all 920 minutes on the season and helped the Bears post 18 team shutouts since the start of the 2017 season.
Raphino initiated and finished the play on the Bears' first goal at the 33:18 mark. As Brown countered in its attacking half, Raphino played a ball out wide to White who sent a ball back into the box where a well-positioned Raphino drove a shot into the upper right side of the goal.
Maxwell secured the result with a goal with 11 seconds to play. After Cummings played a free kick into the attacking third, Raphino slid a pass to Maxwell who curved a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area inside the left post.
For the match, Brown led in shots on goal (7-3) while the two sides were tied in shots (11-11) and corner kicks (2-2). Raphino paced all players with three shots and three shots on goal.
Columbia goalkeeper Liz Matei charted four saves.
