WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Washington notched a pair of first-half goals as the Brown men's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest to the Colonials, 2-0, Saturday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field.
Brown (1-2-0) split a pair of games during the team's trip to the nation's capital after a shutout victory at Howard on Thursday. George Washington improved to 2-2-1 overall.
Max Waldau (Fort Myers, Fla.) posted a career-high eight saves in his first start of the season. Justin Grady came up with three stops for the win on the other end.
"We suffered from a difficult start," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "Trying to come back from being behind 2-0 proved to be too much today. The players did better as the game went along and we were dangerous more often in the second half with some really good moments.
George Washington took an early lead when Max Holdsworth converted a penalty kick in the fourth minute. Sandro Weber then gave the Colonials a two-goal advantage at 23:49 as he fielded a pass from Haukur Hilmarsson and beat Waldau to extend the lead at halftime.
Brown outshot the Colonials by an 8-7 margin in the second half and Waldau corralled five shots to keep the Bears within reach. Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) and Rodrigo D'Andrea (Sau Paulo, Brazil) both put shots on net in the final 20 minutes of play, but Grady kept the visitors off the board to secure the win.
The Bears finished with a 9-4 edge in corner kicks, while George Washington outshot the visitors, 18-10. D'Andrea paced all players with four shots.
Brown will host Boston University on Wednesday, September 18 at 7 PM. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
