PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Alex Mina (Aldie, Va.) opened the scoring with his first goal of the season, as the Brown men's soccer team tied Boston University, 1-1, in Wednesday night's non-conference match at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
Brown (1-2-1) outshot the Terriers by a 17-16 margin. BU moved to 0-5-1 on the season.
"It was good to see tonight that we created a lot of chances," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "The guys had good energy and effort, all of the players, it was excellent tonight. We just have to finish better to move up to the next step, but happy with the effort and attitude."
James Swomley (Newton, Mass.) finished with a pair of saves for the Bears. Michael Stone played the first half for the Terriers, and then gave way to William Bonnelyche, who went the rest of the way and made two stops.
Mina put the home team on the board in the 22nd minute. After Jackson Goebel (Houston, Texas) sent a centering pass from the left side, Nicolas Perez (Atlanta, Ga.) pushed through a defender and flicked a pass out in front of the net, where Mina finished for the one timer. Perez earned his second assist of the season.
Boston answered back at 59:08 in the second half, when Matt McDonnell took advantage of a long pass in Brown territory, and beat Swomley to the ball for the equalizer.
The Bears nearly scored the go-ahead goal on a trio of chances with five minutes left in regulation, but Bonnelyche came up with a stop, followed by a shot off the crossbar and another bid wide to force overtime. The two teams combined for five shots in extra time, but neither was able to find the back of the net to seal the draw.
Rodrigo D'Andrea (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led all players with five shots. Brown edged the Terriers in corner kicks, 5-3.
Brown will visit Bryant on Sunday at 1 PM.
