PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sophomore catcher Madi Cranford hit her team-high fourth home run of the season, but Brown University softball fell to Princeton University in the series finale, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field.
Completing a three-game Ivy League series, the Bears (8-17, 1-8 Ivy) attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning behind the lead-off home run from Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) before the visiting Tigers (10-16, 6-3 Ivy) closed out the contest.
"Princeton is a strong, well-coached team that made a lot of plays this weekend," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "We hit the ball better today and made a lot of solid contact but got unlucky a few too many times. We'll look to have a good week of practice before we host Yale next weekend."
Cranford finished the game 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, a run, and an RBI. She hit her third home run in six Ivy League games played this season and posted her ninth multi-hit game in 19 games played on the year.
Senior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Katie O'Leary (Manteca, Calif.) each added a hit. Senior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) pitched 4.2 innings in relief, permitting two runs on five hits with a strikeout.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Allison Harvey lifted an RBI double to left field. The visitors extended their edge to 4-0 in the top of the third behind a two-run single from Keeley Walsh and an RBI from Gianna Mavica.
The Bears threatened in the bottom of the third as sophomore Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) led off the frame with a walk and advanced to third base before Princeton escaped the jam.
In the top of the fifth, Mackenzie Meyer drove a home run to left field to make the margin 5-0. Kaitlyn Waslawski gave Princeton a 6-0 lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI double to right center.
Cranford led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to left field prior to Princeton recording the game's final three outs.
Princeton's Allie Reynolds earned the win (6-8), tossing a complete-game 7.0 innings and allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts.
Next, Brown hosts Yale in a three-game series, comprising a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 13 starting at 12:30 p.m. (ESPN+) and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 14 at 12:30 p.m. (ESPN+).
