Bears win three races on the Charles River
BOSTON – The No. 4 Brown University men's crew won three races against Boston University, including in the varsity eight to retain the Michalson Cup, as the Bears battled the Terriers Saturday morning on the Charles River.
"We had a good team performance today," said head coach Paul Cooke. "BU has an impressive group and a strong team and it took good racing and poise to get victories on the race course today. All of the Brown crews represented the team well."
Brown opened the morning with a victory in the varsity race, winning in a time of 5:46.6, as the Bears took the lead at the midway point and held off the Terriers down the stretch. BU crossed in a time of 5:48.4. Brown held on to the Michalson Cup for the second straight years after the Bears took back the cup in Providence last spring.
"The varsity was pressed early but kept their heads under pressure," said Cooke. "They rowed good determined strokes through the middle of race to take the lead. It was a good step forward for our team."
The Brown second varsity boat raced out to an early lead at the 500 mark and finished at 6:03.4 before the Terriers crossed at 6:13.7. Brown also claimed a win in the third varsity as the Bears finished strong and held off a late push by the Terriers, winning in a time of 5:57.2, before BU finished at 5:59.7
Boston captured the final race of the day in the fourth varsity at 6:34.9.
Brown will visit Harvard next Saturday as the Bears look to retain the Stein Cup against the Crimson.
