CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 5 Brown University men's crew team picked up a victory in the second varsity eights, but the Bears fell to Harvard in the varsity eight, as the two programs competed Sunday morning on the Charles River.
The Brown crews put together solid performances on good rowing conditions with a light headwind, but Harvard captured three races on the day, including in the varsity eight to take back the Stein Cup. Harvard captured the varsity race with a winning time of 5:45.3 to just edge past Bruno at 5:46.6.
"The Brown varsity was put under a lot of pressure from the Harvard crew early, but they kept their composure, took good strokes and started to close in the second half of the race," said head coach Paul Cooke. "We had an opening and we need to get better at taking race-winning strokes when we have the opportunity. We can do that. This is a good group and I am confident the will get even faster in the weeks ahead."
The Brown second varsity boat opened the morning with their second victory in as many weeks, finishing in a time of 5:47.2, before the Crimson crossed one second later at 5:48.2.
"Our second varsity was very strong in the middle of the race and passed Harvard there," said Cooke. "Their rhythm was strong and they were able to hold off a late charge. It was a big victory that showed toughness and good discipline and trust in each other."
Harvard claimed the third varsity race at 5:59.5 before Brown crossed at 6:01.9. The Crimson wrapped up the morning with a win in the fourth varsity at 6:03.4.
Brown will host Northeastern on the Seekonk River next Saturday.
