PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Ashli Lotz finished 3-for-3 at the plate, but Brown University softball fell to crosstown rival Providence College, 6-0, in its home opener on Wednesday afternoon at the Brown Softball Field.

After playing their first 21 games of the season away from home, the Bears (8-14) dropped the decision to the Friars (21-12) in their home debut as the visitors plated one run in each of the first and sixth innings and two runs in each of the third and fourth frames.

"It was nice to get on our home field for a game for the first time this season," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder said. "Today obviously wasn't the result we wanted, but we're looking forward to getting back to work before we host Princeton this weekend for our first home Ivy series."

Lotz (Austin, Texas) posted three hits in a game for the fourth time this season. Making her season debut, junior Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) tallied a double while senior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) and sophomore Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) added one hit apiece.

Pitching in relief, freshman Lauren Innerst (San Jose, Calif.) hurled 3.0 innings, giving up just one run on three hits with three strikeouts.

The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Jessica Tomaso sent an RBI single through the right side. PC extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third behind an RBI single from Mackensie Compton and a fly ball from Crista San Antonio.

Providence went ahead 5-0 in the top of the fourth on a ground ball from Vanessa Portillo and a single from Tomaso. PC tacked on a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI single up the middle from Portillo.

Providence starter Miranda Trinidad earned the win (3-2), tossing 4.0 innings and allowing no runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Julia Murphy completed the shutout, throwing 3.0 innings and permitting one hit with two strikeouts. Tomaso closed the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Next, Brown hosts Princeton in a three-game series, comprising a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 6 starting at 12:30 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 7 at 12:30 p.m.
