PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 5 Brown University men's crew captured three races over No. 6 Northeastern, including a victory in the varsity eight to retain the Dreissigacker Cup, as the two programs faced off Saturday morning on the Seekonk River.
Facing a strong headwind and tough rowing conditions, the varsity boat came up with a big victory in the final race of the day, finishing with a winning time of 6:11.8. Northeastern crossed less than two seconds later at 6:13.2 as the Bears downed the Huskies for the second straight year to keep the Dreissigacker Cup at Marston Boathouse. Brown moved to 32-23 in the all-time series between the two schools.
"Handling rough conditions has been a goal for us all year and the team did a good job with that today," said head coach Paul Cooke on the team's overall performance. "The varsity was able to handle the rough water and keep their length in the headwind, especially in the middle of the race."
The second varsity cruised to victory in a time of 6:33.9, winning for the third time in as many weeks, before Northeastern crossed at 6:40.2. Brown also edged past Northeastern in the third varsity in a time of 6:48.6 to 6:50.0.
Northeastern won the varsity fours at 7:50.8.
Brown will look to keep it going next weekend when the Bears visit Dartmouth in the race for the Atalanta Cup.
