Bears claim varsity, second varsity races
FAIRLEE, Vt. – The No. 5 Brown University men's crew claimed a pair of races against Dartmouth, including in the varsity race to keep the Atalanta Cup, as the two programs faced off at Lake Morey on Saturday.
The races were moved to Lake Morey in Vermont due to fast currents and high water on the Connecticut River, which provided solid racing all around, despite cold and wet conditions in the morning.
"The varsity made a few adjustments over the course of the past week and it helped," said head coach Paul Cooke. "The men have been training well and the focus is good."
Brown ended the morning with a victory in the varsity race, as the Bears jumped out to a early lead and remained in control around the 600 mark, and then pulled away in the second half for the win at 6:09.3 to retain the Atalanta Cup for the second straight season. Dartmouth crossed just over five seconds later at 6:14.9.
"It was a good aggressive piece, a complete race," said senior captain Alex Miklasevich.
The second varsity also benefited from a strong final 1,000 meters as the Bears cruised to victory at 6:11.7 before the Big Green finished at 6:20.2. The Brown second varsity earned its fourth straight victory of the season.
Dartmouth opened the day with a pair of wins in the fourth and third varsity events. The Brown third varsity finished at 6:14.1 after Dartmouth crossed at 6:07.9. Dartmouth took the fourth varsity at 6:12.4 before the Bears finished at 6:16.3.
"Everyone on the team contributed to the wins today," added Cooke. "The third varsity will bounce back. The crews have a lot of momentum and they can build on these successes."
Brown will wrap up the regular season at Princeton next Saturday in the annual race for the Content Cup.
