Â
Brown (5-17, 2-4) outhit Penn (13-8, 3-3) by a 13-12 margin and had four players post multiple-hit games in the team's highest run total of the season.
Â
"Our team stepped up and responded with a solid team effort," said head coach Grant Achilles. "Our pitchers did a great job, and there were clutch at-bats all though our lineup. Now it's back to work this week in preparation for a solid Cornell team."
Â
Ciufo went 3-for-5 at the plate, made up of all extra-base hits with a double, triple and home run, and also added three runs scored and five RBIs. Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) also had three hits and Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) hit the team's other home run. Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) and Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) posted two hits apiece as Homza extended his multiple-hit game streak to four games.
Â
Dustin Baird (Indianapolis, Ind.) earned the win out of the bullpen as he finished the game with three scoreless innings. Ryan Kuntz (Minneapolis, Minn.) went four innings as the starter in the no decision and Jacob Sadowitz took the loss for the Quakers.
Â
The Bears went right to work with five runs in the first inning, highlighted by Ciufo's two-run triple, as the Bears scored four runs with two outs. Nevertheless, Penn chipped away with five runs over the next four frames to even the score.
Â
Brown regained the lead in the fifth when Sluys launched a two-run homer to left center for his third of the season, but Penn responded with two in the bottom half to tie the game.
Â
The Bears ended strong with seven runs in the last three innings, including four in the seventh when Farris hit a two-run double and Ciufo followed with a two-run homer, his fourth of the season. Brown tacked on three more runs in the ninth inning.
Â
The Brown bullpen held the Quaker lineup to just three hits in the final four innings. Joshua Wilder (San Marcos, Texas) tossed a hitless inning and Baird shut the door for the final nine outs, using three strikeouts with no walks, for his first win.
Â
Brown will visit Cornell for a three-game set next weekend.
