Â
Brown moved to 4-13 overall and 1-2 to open Ivy League play. Yale won the second game, 11-3, and now stands at 8-11, 2-1.
"I am very proud of how we battled and came back in game one," said head coach Grant Achilles. "It was gutsy on both sides of the ball the way we responded."
Â
Mark Sluys (Gig Harbor, Wash.) went 3-for-5 with four walks in the doubleheader, and also hit .566 in the series with a .692 on-base percentage. Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) had a strong day at the plate as he hit .500 in the two games, while Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) and Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit .429 and .400, respectively.
Â
Game 1: Brown 8, Yale 7
Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) hit a three-run go-ahead home run in the seventh inning as the Bears scored six in the frame to take the first game of the doubleheader. Lomuscio and Deere had three hits apiece in the opener as the Bears drew ten total walks. Phillips drove in four runs on two hits, while Homza added two RBIs and two runs scored. Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) posted two hits.
Â
Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) put together a solid start on the mound with just one earned run over six innings and five strikeouts in the no decision. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) had the win and Farris came in for the final six outs to earn the save.
Â
Brown scored twice in the fifth when Phillips and Deere each posted RBI hits, but the Bulldogs came back with two in the sixth to tie the game. Yale then added three in the seventh for the three-run lead.
Â
The Bears erupted for six runs on five hits in the seventh. Frank Caprio (Providence, R.I.) lifted an RBI single to right and Homza followed with a two-run double to right center to even the score. Phillips then launched a two-out three-run home run to left center to push the home side in front by three runs.
Â
Yale made it interesting with two runs in the ninth, but Phillips caught Tim DeGraw stealing to get the first out of the inning, and Farris got out of the jam for his first save of the season.
Â
Game 2: Yale 11, Brown 3
Alex Stiegler earned the win for Yale in the second game as he went eight innings with two runs and six strikeouts. Brown used seven pitchers and Ryan Kuntz was handed the loss as the starter.
Â
Sluys went 2-for-3 as one of six Bears with a hit and also drove in one run on his second home run of the season. Homza and Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) added solo shots to give the team three home runs in the game.
Â
Yale used four runs in the fifth to establish a 5-1 lead after four innings. The Bears cut the lead to three with a solo home run in the fifth, but the Bulldogs added one in the seventh and five more runs in the ninth. Sluys tacked on a leadoff home run in the bottom of the ninth.
"Yale did a good job of scoring in bunches and we didn't," said Achilles. "Our bullpen covered a lot of innings over the weekend. It's back to work tomorrow in preparation for Bryant."
Â
The Bears will host Bryant on Tuesday at 3 PM.
