
Men’s Hockey Entertains No. 9 UMass on Tuesday Night

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's hockey team will wrap up the first part of the season on Tuesday night when the Bears host No. 9 UMass at Meehan Auditorium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and NESN.

Brown dropped a pair of conference road games this past weekend, falling at Union, 5-0, and at RPI in overtime, 2-1. Luke Krys scored against Rensselaer in the only goal of the weekend for the Bears. Brown had a one-goal lead late at RPI, but the Engineers scored an extra-attacker goal with two seconds left in regulation, and then notched the game winner 36 seconds into overtime. Luke Kania started against Union, before giving way to senior goalie Gavin Nieto late in the second period. Nieto finished with a 1.40 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage over the pair of games. Brown averaged 25.5 shots per game in the two-game span.
Scouting Massachusetts
The No. 9 Minutemen head into Providence at 4-1-1 over their last six games after sweeping a pair of contests against Maine this past weekend. UMass is ninth in the nation in scoring at 3.56 goals per game, led by junior Mitchell Chaffee, who has a team high 12 goals and 21 points. Fellow junior Oliver Chau paces the lineup with ten assists and is one of four players on the team with at least ten points. Filip Lindberg and Matt Murray have split time in net with eight starts apiece. Murray leads the duo with a 7-1 record to go along with a 1.39 GAA and a .932 save percentage. UMass is also ranked fifth in the nation in team defense, limiting opponents to 1.81 goals per game, and is 15.5 percent on the power play.
Brown vs. UMass All-Time
Brown and Massachusetts will play in the 13th all-time meeting on Tuesday, dating back to the 1929-30 season. Brown holds a 10-2 advantage in the series, although UMass captured the most recent meeting, with a 4-1 victory in Amherst during the 2000-2001 campaign. The previous meeting took place in 1970, when the Bears won 5-2 at home.
