PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Oliver Chau netted a pair of goals for No. 9 Massachusetts as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Minutemen, 4-0, Tuesday night in non-conference play at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown moved to 3-10-0 overall after its final contest of the semester, while UMass improved to 12-4-1 on the season.
Senior Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 33 stops for the Bears, reaching the 30-plus save mark for the fourth time this season. Filip Lindberg had 27 saves in the shutout for the Minutemen.
"I don't fault our work ethic, by and large we're a team that works very hard," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We haven't scored many goals and it has been a real challenge, but we have to find a way to generate something offensively."
Brown outshot the Minutemen by a 10-9 margin in a scoreless opening period. The Bears killed the only penalty of the frame, highlighted by a glove save from Nieto to deny John Leonard's shot from the slot.
After Brown killed another penalty early in the second, Chau opened the scoring for UMass at 7:49, when he took advantage of a 2-on-1 rush and tapped home a feed from Philip Launov to make it 1-0. Chau added his second of the game with 27 seconds left in the period to give the visitors a two-goal lead heading into the third frame.
Brown had its first power play 1:33 into the third period, but Lindberg turned away both bids to preserve the two-goal lead.
Despite a flurry of shots by the Bears just after the midway point of the third, the Minutemen responded with back-to-back goals in less than one minute, as Leonard scored on a backhander and Reed Lebster followed for the four-goal lead to seal the win.
Brown held a 28-25 advantage on faceoffs, led by Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.), who went 16-9 at the dot. Sophomore Michael Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) led the Bears with five shots.
Brown returns to action on January 4 at New Hampshire.
