PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Trey Dodd (St. Louis, Mo.) notched the first goal of the game, but No. 13 Providence scored three times in the middle period, as the Brown men's hockey team fell to the Friars, 4-2, in the 34th annual Mayor's Cup Saturday afternoon at Schneider Arena.
Brown dropped to 3-7 overall, while Providence improved to 8-4-3 on the season.
In addition to Dodd, rookie Cole Quisenberry (Denver, Colo.) also scored for the Bears. Senior Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 31 stops in net for his third game of the season with at least 30 saves. Michael Lackey recorded 23 saves for the Friars in the win.
"I thought we played hard, we just have to figure out a way to minimize those stretches in the second, but overall I'm more focused on the process and how we're playing," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "I did think we did a lot of good things, obviously not happy with losing, but we played the end pretty hard."
Dodd gave the Bears an early lead at 2:48 into the contest. He raced out to a loose puck in the offensive end and ripped a one-timer from the left circle for his first tally of the season.
The two teams combined for six penalties in the opening period. The Friars capitalized on their third power play of the period when Patrick Moynihan found the back of the net with 1:22 remaining to even the score.
Providence carried over its momentum into the second frame as Parker Ford finished a feed from Greg Printz at 3:40 for the 2-1 advantage. Dodd had another good look midway through the period, but Lackey came up with a big save on a shot in front to preserve the one-goal lead.
The Friars then scored twice within a 1:21 span near the end of the period. Nieto denied Ford in front, but Tyce Thompson was there for the rebound, before Shane Kavanagh scored on a wraparound for the three-goal lead.
Brown answered back early in the third period. After Bradley Cocca (Toronto, Ont.) dropped a pass in the offensive end, Quisenberry took a shot from the right circles that went off the far post and into the net. Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) also had an assist.
The Bears killed back-to-back penalties in the second half of the period to maintain a two-goal deficit, and then pulled Nieto for the extra skater with under two minutes to play, but the Friars held on to retain the Mayor's Cup.
Brown will return to ECAC action at Union (12/6) and RPI (12/7) next weekend.
