SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Five different players scored for Union and Darion Hanson stopped all 25 shots he faced as the Brown men's hockey team fell on the road, 5-0, in Friday night's ECAC matchup at Messa Rink.
Brown (3-8-0, 3-6-0) outshot Union (4-11-0, 3-4-0) by a 25-21 margin.
Junior Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) made 10 saves as the starter, before giving way to senior Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.), who stopped six shots. Hanson made 25 saves for the Dutchmen to earn the shutout.
Union scored three times in the opening 20 minutes, starting just 1:16 into the contest, when Anthony Rinaldi took advantage of a turnover in the Brown end for the unassisted goal. Matt Allen then scored 15 seconds into the first power play of the night before Sean Harrison finished a one timer in front for the three-goal advantage.
Brown outshot the Dutchmen by a 10-3 margin during the middle period, including six unanswered shots in the opening five minutes.
Nevertheless, Union came up with a pair of goals in the second frame. Josh Kosack rifled home a loose puck following a turnover, and then Michael Ryan scored less than three minutes later before Nieto took over in net, giving the home team a five-goal lead heading into the third period.
Brown had its first power play of the night 5:18 into the third period, but Hanson denied Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) and kept the Bears off the board. The two teams had six shots apiece during a scoreless third frame as the home side secured the shutout.
"We didn't play good enough hockey and we just need to play better," said head coach Brendan Whittet.
Defensemen Luke Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Giuttari led the Bears with five shots apiece.
Brown will visit RPI on Saturday at 7 PM.
