WALTHAM, Mass. – Matt Gosiewski provided the only goal of the game early in the second period as the Brown men's hockey team fell at Bentley, 1-0, in Tuesday night's non-conference contest at Bentley Arena.
Brown, playing its first non-conference game of the season, moves to 3-6-0 overall. Bentley improves to 4-8-0.
"We need to be better, all of us, it just wasn't good enough tonight," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We have to play hockey a certain way to be successful and when we get away from our structure, when we get away from our tenacity and work ethic, it's going to be hard to beat teams."
Luke Kania (Chicago, Ill.) stopped 25 shots in net for the Bears. Fraser Kirk made 16 saves for Bentley in the shutout.
The two teams combined for nine shots and three penalties in a scoreless opening period. Kania came up big with three stops during Bentley's first power play of the night.
Bentley opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 4:19 in the middle period. Kania turned away a shot by Jonathan Desbiens, but Gosiewski was there to clean up the rebound to give the home side the early lead.
Brown killed 53 seconds of a remaining penalty to open the third period, but the Falcons returned the favor midway through the stanza to maintain a one-goal lead.
The Bears pulled Kania with just over two minutes remaining for the extra skater, and were able to put two shots on target, but Kirk stopped a shot by Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) and Luke Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) had his final shot blocked Marcus Walter, securing the win for the home team.
Jallen and Bradley Cocca (Toronto, Ontario) led the way with three shots apiece.
Brown will visit No. 13 Providence on Saturday (4 PM) in the annual battle for the Mayor's Cup.
Video of all home contests and most ECAC games, home and away, will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Fans can subscribe and view games by purchasing a monthly package for $4.99 or a yearly package for $49.99.
