PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) tied the game late in the second period, but Greg Moro's game winner in overtime sent No. 8 Clarkson past the Brown men's hockey team, 2-1, in Friday's ECAC contest at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown moved to 2-5-0 overall and in the conference. Clarkson improved to 9-3-1, 4-1-0.
"They're a very good hockey team, but we need to find a way to come out with at least a point," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "It is a process. You take the positives. They're a very good team and I thought we battled them tooth and nail. That game could've gone either way and it just didn't go our way tonight."
Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) had 29 saves for the Bears, while Frank Marotte made 20 stops in the win.
After 19 minutes of scoreless play to open the contest, Anthony Callin scored with 37 seconds left in the period, as he sent a shot past Nieto for the lead.
Brown killed a pair of penalties in the first half of the middle period. The Bears nearly evened the score with a shorthanded bid, one of three in the period, as Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.) stole the puck along the boards and set up Michael Maloney (McHenry, Ill.) for a quick look in front.
Giuttari scored a power play goal with 53 seconds left in the middle period as he blasted a one-timer from the left circle for his first tally of the season. Tony Stillwell (Green Bay, Wis.) and Tristan Crozier (Calgary, Alberta) picked up the assists.
The two teams combined for eight shots in a scoreless third period. Marotte turned away back-to-back shots from Ben Taylor (Falmouth, Mass.) and Jack Gessert (Novi, Mich.) with three minutes remaining to keep the game tied.
Moro finished a 2-on-1 rush with 1:44 left in overtime to give Clarkson the road victory.
Brown will host St. Lawrence Saturday night at 7 PM.
