PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's hockey team scored three times in the first period and held off a late attack as the Bears topped St. Lawrence, 3-2, in ECAC action Saturday night at Meehan Auditorium.
Brown snapped a three-game skid and split the weekend to improve to 3-5-0 overall and in the conference. SLU drops to 3-10-1, 1-5-0.
Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 33 saves in net for the victory, highlighted by 15 stops in the third period. Daniel Mannella had 17 saves for the Saints.
Justin Jallen (St. Paul, Minn.), Luke Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) provided the scoring for the Bears, while Colin Burston (Winnipeg, Manitoba) posted two assists.
"We found a way to win," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "A win is a win, and those are two really important points. We needed those points, so we'll grow from it and learn from it, but we didn't play very good hockey."
Jallen gave the Bears an early lead when he scored his seventh goal of the season 3:39 into the contest. Burston took advantage of a turnover in the offensive end and set up Jallen for a shot in between the circles.
The Bears added two more goals in the final five minutes of the period, starting at 15:59, when Krys corralled a good look from Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) and sent a shot through traffic for his first career goal. Cole Quisenberry (Denver, Colo.) also earned an assist for his first point.
Beaudoin made it a three-goal game at 17:13 when he finished a feed from Burston in front of the net for his second tally of the season. Trey Dodd (S.t Louis, Mo.) added a secondary assist.
St. Lawrence outshot Brown by a 9-7 margin in a scoreless second period.
The Saints made it interesting with two goals in the third period. Zach Risteau put the visitors on the board at 5:13 before David Jankowski scored on the power play midway through the frame.
Nevertheless, Nieto made several key stops down the stretch, and two final shots from Alex Gilmour and Aleksi Peltonen went just wide in the final seconds to preserve the Bruno victory.
Brown will visit Bentley in non-conference play on Tuesday night.
