
Men’s Soccer Closes Non-Conference Play on Wednesday, Welcomes Penn on Saturday

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men's soccer team will conclude non-conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at UMass Lowell (7:00 p.m.) before hosting Penn at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Bears played in two overtime games last week, with a 1-0 loss to Holy Cross on Tuesday and a 1-1 tie at Cornell on Saturday. Sophomore Derek Waleffe scored the lone goal for the Bears in the week with a first-half tally against the Big Red.
BALANCED ATTACK
Brown has featured a balanced attack in 2019 with 14 different student-athletes registering points and 10 different players tallying goals. Seniors Daniel Schiller (1G, 2A) and Matthew Chow (1G, 2A) and sophomore Derek Waleffe (2G) lead the team with four points apiece.
THE GOALKEEPERS
Sophomore James Swomley leads the goalkeepers with eight starts, a 1.06 goals-against average, a .816 save percentage, and 40 total saves. Swomley leads the Ivy League in save percentage (.816), is second in saves per game (4.44) and has recorded two shutouts on the year. Junior Max Gross – three starts, .722 save percentage, and 1.67 GAA – and sophomore Max Waldau – two starts, .786 save percentage, and 1.35 GAA – have also seen action this season.
SCOUTING UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks are 7-5-1 this season and are 2-3-0 in the America East. UMass Lowell has dropped three straight and fell most recently at Vermont, 2-1, on Saturday. Stanley Alves leads the River Hawks in scoring with a team high four goals and 10 points while adding two assists. Renato Kauziaric paces the team in helpers with five. Patrik Gujic has started the majority of the games in goal (10 starts) and has a 0.97 goals-against average, a .643 save percentage and one shutout.
LAST TIME VS. UMASS LOWELL
The two teams last met in 2017 with the Bears posting a 1-0 win on Oct. 24 at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
SCOUTING PENN
The Quakers are 6-5-2 overall and in a three-way tie for second place in the Ivy League with a 2-1-1 record. Penn has won back-to-back overtime games, a 1-0 victory at Drexel on Oct. 22, and a 1-0 double overtime win against No. 24 Yale on Saturday. Joey Bhangdia is second in the conference with six goals, leading the team, and has three game-winning scores. Brandon Bartel is second in scoring with six points on two goals and two assists. In net, Dane Jacomen leads the league in shutouts with four and is second in goals-against average (0.95). He has recorded a .750 save percentage through 11 starts.
LAST TIME VS. PENN
Brown fell in double overtime to Penn last season, 2-1, on Oct. 28. Toby Howell '19 netted the equalizer in the 86th minute to force extra time.
