LOWELL, Mass. – Senior Matthew Chow (Vancouver, British Columbia) notched the lone goal of the game midway through the second half to lift the Brown men's soccer team over UMass Lowell, 1-0, Wednesday night at Cushing Field.
Brown improved to 3-8-3 overall after the non-conference finale, while the River Hawks moved 7-6-1.
"Tonight was an outstanding win against a talented opponent," said head coach Patrick Laughlin. "Our team depth was on display with some really good performances from several players."
Max Waldau (Fort Myers, Fla.) turned away three shots to pick up his first shutout of the season and second of his career. Zach Rowell allowed one goal with four stops for the home team in the loss.
The Bears held a slight edge in shots with a 6-5 advantage in the opening 45 minutes, including two on target from Zakary Lawal (Placentia, Calif.) and Malcolm Johnson (Wilmington, Del.), but Rowell stopped both bids to keep the game scoreless.
Chow scored the game winner with less than 20 minutes left in regulation for his second tally of the season, giving him five points in the last four contests. Rookie Paul Elliott (Denver, Colo.) earned the assist on the play for his first career point.
The Brown defense held strong the rest of the way and limited the River Hawks to just three bids to close out regulation, including just one on target, as Waldau came up with a timely stop to deny Stefano Reis Gomes in the final minute to secure the shutout victory.
Chow led all players with four shots. As a team, UMass Lowell outshot the Bears, 13-9, but the visitors led the way in corner kicks, 5-2.
The Bears return to Ivy League play on Saturday when they host Penn at 3:30 PM.
