
Women’s Soccer Falls to Villanova in Overtime, 1-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown University women's soccer shutout Villanova University in regulation, but the Wildcats earned a 1-0 win in overtime behind a goal in the 93rd minute at Stevenson-Pincince Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears (1-3-0) and visiting Wildcats (4-2-0) played a scoreless 90 minutes prior to Villanova's Jasmine Ruiz scoring the game-winning, golden goal just over two minutes into the first overtime period.
On the game's scoring play, Kristin Barbour nudged an indirect free kick on the right side of the penalty area in front of Ruiz who slotted a shot into the left side of the goal at the 92:05 mark.
Two of Brown's best chances to score came in the first half as freshman Sara Bermudez (South San Francisco, Calif.) put a shot on target in the 11th minute that required a diving save and junior Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) drove a free kick from 20 yards off the crossbar in the 38th minute.
The Bears earned a penalty kick in the 86th minute, but the attempt from freshman Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) went wide.
Brown senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made five saves in the setback (1-3-0). She kept the game deadlocked at 0-0 in the 71st minute as she punched a Villanova shot over the bar.
Brown's back line of sophomore center back Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.), senior left back Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), and freshman right back Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.) contained the Villanova attack throughout the contest.
The Wildcats held advantages in shots (18-7), shots on goal (6-1), and corner kicks (10-2). In the second half, Villanova led 10-2 in shots and 7-1 in corners.
Villanova goalie Rebecca Gartner earned the win (1-0-0), playing in the second half and overtime. Hensley Hancuff stopped one shot in the first half.
Brown moved to 2-2-0 in the all-time series vs. the Wildcats.
Next, Brown plays at crosstown rival Providence College on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Stevenson-Pincince Field to host Holy Cross on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
