PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel made eight saves as Brown University women's soccer battled crosstown rival Providence College in a 2-0 setback on Thursday night at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
The Bears (1-4-0) remained within one goal through most of the contest after the Friars (4-2-0) scored in the 30th minute before the hosts added a late tally in the 87th minute.
Brown stayed within one play of equalizing for the majority of the match prior to Providence taking its late 2-0 lead. The Bears' defense has allowed just five goals in five games played with its previous three setbacks coming via 1-0 score lines.
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) increased her all-time save total to 240 career saves. She turned aside five shots in the first half, making a pair of extended saves. She parried a ball over the crossbar in the 18th minute and dove to her right to stop an attempt in the 30th minute.
Freshman Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) helped generate Brown's first half chances, playing a dangerous free kick into the box in the 14th minute and sending long throws into the penalty area in the 35th and 41st minutes. G'Bye continued the pressure in the second half, executing three long throws in the period's opening moments before driving in a corner kick in the 54th minute.
Etzel (1-4-0) kept Brown within one goal through much of the second half, covering a low shot in the 65th minute and stopping a header in the 78th minute among three saves in the stanza.
The Bears pressed forward in the game's final 20 minutes with freshman Sara Bermudez (South San Francisco, Calif.) driving a shot on target in the 71st minute, senior Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) putting a left-footed shot on goal in the 74th minute, and freshman Rebecca Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y/) heading a shot on frame in the 85th minute.
Providence scored in the 30th minute as Amber Birchwell finished a loose ball on the edge of the six-yard box after an initial drive from the Friars was blocked. Hailee Duserick picked up an assist on the play.
With Brown pushing numbers forward, the Friars took a 2-0 lead in the 87th minute on a goal from Hannah McNulty. Etzel came out of the penalty area to stop an initial charge before McNulty ran onto a loose ball and lofted a shot into the goal from 30 yards.
