Etzel Makes Double-Figure Saves for Second Time in Career
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel tallied 10 saves, but Shaelan Murison scored in the fourth minute as Brown University women's soccer dropped a 1-0 decision to the University of California, Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon at Harder Stadium.
In the second and final game of their trip to California, the Bears (0-2-0) fell via a 1-0 score line for the second time in as many contests as the Gauchos (4-0-0) remained undefeated and have now outscored their opponents 13-1 on the year.
UCSB registered the contest's lone goal at the 3:54 mark as Mallory Hromatko drove a cross from the right side into the penalty area where a waiting Shaelan Murison sent a one-timed shot into the back of the net.
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made double-figure saves for the second time in her career in the loss (0-2-0). She now has 227 career saves and moved into ninth place on Brown's all-time saves list, passing Brenna Hogue '10 who made 220 career stops.
Etzel turned aside six shots in the opening half, making a pair of diving saves inside of the first four minutes, coming up with a kick save in the 21st minute, and extending for another save in the 31st minute. Senior Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) kept the Gauchos out of the goal in the 21st minute, clearing a shot off the goal line.
Brown's best scoring chance in the first half came in the ninth minute as junior Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) powered a shot on goal from 25 yards out that challenged the Gauchos' goalkeeper.
The Bears created chances in the second half with free kicks from sophomore Sydney Cummings (Millstone Township, N.J.) in the 56th and 72nd minutes threatening the Gauchos' defense and a cross from freshman Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) moving across the face of goal in the 65th minute.
Etzel kept the Bears within one goal in the 62nd minute as she charged off her line to snuff out a breakaway.
For the match, UCSB held advantages in shots (19-7), shots on goal (12-4), and corner kicks (12-4). Brown trimmed those margins in the second half with the hosts holding slighter edges in shots (8-4) and shots on goal (4-2).
