Lakeville, Mass., Native Nets Fourth Career Goal
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Abby Carchio scored a goal in the 45th minute to lead Brown University women's soccer to a 1-0 win over Sacred Heart University on Friday night in its home opener at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (1-2-0) controlled play in both halves and went ahead for good with 25.2 seconds remaining in the opening period in their victory over the visiting Pioneers (0-4-0).
"I think the team played well tonight – obviously generated a lot of chances," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "Sacred Heart is always a tough team. Year after year they have been hard for us to break down. I was happy with how many opportunities we created. I wish we could have put a few more away but getting the result is great."
Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) netted her first goal of the season and the fourth goal of her career while sophomore Star White (Norfolk, Va.) tallied an assist, her first of the year and the seventh of her career.
Senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) earned the win (1-2-0) – the 28th of her career – and posted her first shutout of the season, her 20th career clean sheet.
Carchio found the back of the net at the 44:34 mark as she came onto a pass from White, carried the ball to the edge of the penalty area, and slotted a shot into the right side of the goal.
The Bears generated opportunities in the game's opening moments as shots from senior Celia Story (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) and Carchio inside of the first six minutes both required extended saves from the SHU goalkeeper. A shot from freshman Sara Bermudez (South San Francisco, Calif.) forced another diving save in the 15th minute.
Brown held a 15-2 edge in shots in the first half and maintained a 9-1 advantage in shots in the second half. For the match, Brown led in shots (24-3), shots on goal (6-0), and corner kicks (5-3).
