
Softball Tops Colgate, 6-1, Falls to Stetson, 3-2, on Opening Day

DELAND, Fla. – Junior Meghan Wimmer hit a pair of doubles and earned a win as a pitcher as Brown University softball defeated Colgate University, 6-1, and fell to Stetson University, 3-2, on Opening Day at Stetson's Patricia Wilson Field on Friday.
In their first day of action at the Hatter Invitational, the Bears (1-1) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second en route to their win over the Raiders (1-5) before the host Hatters (4-7) rallied past Brown with three runs in the bottom of the seventh in the team's second game of the day.
Freshman Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) went 4-for-7 on the day with a double and an RBI while Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) and junior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) both finished 3-for-6 between the two games. Wimmer tallied her first win of the season in the circle against the Raiders.
Next, Brown continues play at the Hatter Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 24, with re-matches against Colgate (1:30 p.m.) and Stetson (6:30 p.m.).
Game 1: Brown 6, Colgate 1
Junior Meghan Wimmer earned the win in the circle and went 2-for-3 with a double at the plate to lead Brown to a 6-1 win over Colgate in its season opener on Friday afternoon.
The Bears took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second and maintained their lead the rest of the way, adding a run in the top of the third and a pair of runs in the away half of the fifth.
Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) tossed 4.0 innings and allowed just one run on two hits with two strikeouts in the win (1-0), while posting two hits and a run as a batter. Freshman Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) earned a save in her collegiate debut, striking out one and giving up just one hit over 3.0 innings.
Sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) and freshman Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) each tallied two hits and one RBI while junior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) went 2-for-4 with a run. Junior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) and senior Grayson Metzger (Severna Park, Md.) each posted an RBI.
Brown opened the game with a 3-0 lead in the top of the second as freshman Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) scored on a passed ball, Lotz brought in a run with a groundout, and junior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) came home on a throwing error.
After Colgate pulled within 3-1 after the bottom of the second, the Bears extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the third with Scarangella coming home following a dropped third strike.
Brown plated two insurance runs in the visiting half of the fifth behind an RBI single from Okimoto to center field and an RBI single from Schmitz to right center.
For Colgate, Bella Crow took the loss (0-4), conceding six runs, three earned, on nine hits with two strikeouts. Jessica Hay tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. At the plate, Virginia Irby notched a double and Nicole Rounsavill registered an RBI.
Game 2: Stetson 3, Brown 2
Junior Meghan Wimmer hit a two-run double, and senior pitcher Katie Orona brought a shutout into the seventh inning, but Brown fell to Stetson, 3-2, on Friday night in its second game of the day.
The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth before the host Hatters rallied for three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the victory.
Freshman Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) went 2-for-3 with a double while sophomore Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) also went 2-for-3. Junior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) posted a double and a run, and junior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) registered a triple.
Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) hurled a complete-game 6.2 innings in the loss (0-1), giving up three runs on three hits with two strikeouts. She allowed just one hit through the first six innings.
For Stetson, Molly McLaughlin hit a two-run single to tie the game, and Linda Ross drove in the game-winning run with a single to left field. Jaime Tino earned the win (2-2), throwing 7.0 innings and conceding two runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
After three scoreless innings, Brown struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth. Blanchard singled with one out before a double to right center from Scarangella put runners on second and third. Wimmer followed with a two-run double to left field.
In the last of the seventh, the Hatters put two runners on base with one out behind a pair of walks. With two outs, McLaughlin proceeded to hit a two-run single to left field before Ross hit a walk-off single to left field.
