
Softball Drops Decisions to Colgate, 6-4, Stetson, 13-7, at Hatter Invitational

DELAND, Fla. – Junior Meghan Wimmer hit .625 on the day with the Bears' first home run of the season, but Brown University softball dropped decisions to Colgate University in extra innings, 6-4, and to host Stetson University, 13-7, on Saturday at Patricia Wilson Field.
In their second day of action at the Hatter Invitational, the Bears (1-3) battled the Raiders (1-8) into extras before falling in eight innings prior to encountering a setback against the Hatters (6-7) in game two.
Between the two games, Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) went 5-for-8 with a homer, two doubles, two RBIs, and two runs. Sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto (Burbank, Calif.) finished 4-for-8 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI.
Next, Brown concludes play at the Hatter Invitational tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 25, against Mount St. Mary's at 12:00 p.m.
Game 1: Colgate 6, Brown 4 (8 Innings)
Sophomore Kaitlin Okimoto went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI, and run, but Brown fell to Colgate, 6-4, in eight innings in its first game of the day and third contest at the Hatter Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Bears and Raiders stood tied at 3-3 at the end of seven innings before Colgate plated three runs in the top of the eighth and held off Brown in the bottom of the frame to take the extra-inning win.
Junior Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.) finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs while sophomore Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) and junior Annie Scarangella (Tucson, Ariz.) each posted an RBI. Junior Meghan Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.) tallied a double and a run.
In the circle, sophomore Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) pitched 4.0 innings in the start, allowing two runs, both earned, on five hits with two strikeouts. Senior Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) took the loss (0-2), giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits in 3.0 innings. Freshman Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) threw 1.0 inning of scoreless relief.
For Colgate, Holly Geranen hit a two-run home run, and Nicole Rounsavill went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Brittany Bendel earned the win (1-0), hurling 4.2 innings of relief and conceding only one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
After the Raiders opened the game with a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on Geranen's two-run homer, Brown struck for two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the score at 2-2. Blanchard hit an RBI single through the left side before Scarangella drove a sacrifice fly to left field.
Okimoto gave the Bears a 3-2 edge in the bottom of the fourth, sending an RBI double to left field. Colgate knotted the score at 3-3 in the top of the sixth on a ground out from Rounsavill.
In the top of the eighth, Baillie Jorth hit an RBI double to right center, Rounsavill drove in another run with a single, and Jordan Miller plated a third run to give Colgate a 6-3 advantage. The Bears scored once in the last of the eighth before the Raiders closed the contest.
Game 2: Stetson 13, Brown 7
Junior Meghan Wimmer finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs, a homer, a double, and a run as Brown dropped a 13-7 decision to Stetson in its second contest of the day and fourth of the weekend on Saturday night.
After the Hatters opened the game with a 9-2 lead, the Bears pulled within 9-5 prior to the hosts scoring four runs over the final three innings.
Alongside Wimmer (Boothwyn, Pa.), freshman Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) enjoyed a 2-for-3 effort with three runs and a double. Senior Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) went 2-for-4 while sophomore Raquel Blanchard (Valencia, Calif.) tallied a pair of RBIs.
Wimmer absorbed the loss (1-1) as a pitcher, giving up nine runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Sophomore Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) tossed 5.2 innings in relief, giving up four runs, three earned, on 10 hits.
For Stetson, Ashley Smith posted a 4-for-5 effort with a home run, double, and three RBIs. Devin Lewis went 3-for-3 with three runs and a homer, and Molly McLaughlin finished 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.
Jaime Tino garnered the win (4-2), hurling 4.0 innings in relief and conceding three runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
After Stetson took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, Brown sliced the margin to 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs. Blanchard drove in a run with a single up the middle prior to a second run scoring on an error later in the frame.
The Hatters plated six runs in the top of the second, claiming a 9-2 edge. Smith and Lewis both homered in the inning.
The Bears scored one run in each of the second, third, and fourth innings to pull within 9-5. Wimmer drove in a pair of runs, including her first homer of the year, and junior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) plated another.
Stetson went up 12-5 going to the bottom of the sixth before Brown scored two more runs to trim the deficit to 12-7. Blanchard and Scarangella both brought home runs with groundouts in the stanza. The hosts added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the final count.
