HANOVER, N.H. – Zach Giuttari (Warwick, R.I.) notched the game winner in the third and five different players scored as the Brown men's hockey team downed Army West Point, 5-3, to wrap up the Dartmouth Ledyard Classic Sunday at Thompson Arena.
Brown (3-7-3) outshot Army, 34-30, and went 1-1 at the tournament. The Black Knights dropped to 8-10-1 overall.
In addition to Giuttari, Joachim Weberg (Oslo, Norway), Trey Dodd (St. Louis, Mo.), Anea Ferrario (Ogden, Utah) and Brent Beaudoin (Londonderry, N.H.) also scored for the Bears. Tommy Marchin (Algonac, Mich.) and Max Gottlieb (Old Bridge, N.J.) had two assists apiece and Beaudoin added an assist for the two-point effort.
Gavin Nieto (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made 27 saves in net for his third win of the season. Jared Dempsey made 29 stops on the other end.
"I thought we did a lot of good things tonight," said head coach Brendan Whittet. "We have to learn to play with a lead, and some of that is a learning process, but I did like the way we responded and we were able to respond with a power-play goal. For us to get that as the game winner, hopefully it is a confidence thing, and we can build off that."
Taylor Maruya gave the Black Knights an early lead when he tipped a shot past Nieto at 6:16.
Brown responded with two goals to end the first period with a one-goal lead. Weberg evened the score midway through the period when he finished a feed from Chris Berger (Buffalo, N.Y.) for his second tally of the tournament and third in as many games. Dodd put the Bears on top with five minutes left in the first period with a backhanded shot in front for his first goal of the season.
Daniel Haider notched the equalizer at 8:50 in the second period, but the back-and-forth action continued, as Brown regained the lead later in the period when Ferrario attacked the net through traffic and muscled a backhander past Dempsey for the 3-2 lead.
After Brendan Soucie tied the game early in the third, the Bears battled back with a power-play goal at 13:05, when Giuttari buried a rebound from the left circle for his second goal of the season.
Beaudoin added an empty-net goal to seal the win. Nieto made 12 saves in the final period and Marchin led the Bears with seven shots.
Brown will travel to Pittsburgh for the Three Rivers Tournament (Jan. 4-5) and will play Robert Morris on Friday in the opening game.
