PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Brown University women's soccer pushed the University of Pennsylvania before falling, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Rhodes Field as the Quakers earned at least a share of the Ivy League title with the result.
In a game rescheduled from Saturday afternoon due to weather and field conditions, the Bears (6-8-1, 2-4-0 Ivy) and Quakers (13-1-1, 5-0-1 Ivy) played to a scoreless first half before the hosts netted goals in the 52nd and 77th minutes.
"It was a hard-fought game on both sides," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "I thought once we settled into the game we were able to get the ball on the ground and combine to get dangerous on the flanks. We had some good services that we weren't able to convert on."
The Quakers remained atop the league standings with 16 points and stayed unbeaten in their last 12 contests. Penn – which has allowed just four goals this year and leads the NCAA in GAA, save percentage, and shutout percentage – extended its winning streak to seven games.
"In the second half, after letting up the goal we got away from what was working for us and tried to play too direct in moments we needed to connect and draw Penn out," McNeill said. "We needed to be more disciplined in those moments, particularly when we were chasing the game. Instead we played right into their hands."
Brown senior goalkeeper Christine Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made three saves in the first 14 minutes before the Bears generated multiple scoring chances. A bid from senior Jennifer Caruso (Brockton, Mass.) carried just wide in the 21st minute before a free kick from freshman Rebecca Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) went high in the 29th minute.
Maintaining that pressure, a shot from junior Abby Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) required a diving save in the 36th minute before freshman Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) played a dangerous free kick into the mixer in the 39th minute.
Early in the second half, Carchio and freshman Zoe Maxwell (Irvington, N.Y.) both created chances before Penn netted the game's first goal in the 52nd minute. The Quakers' Allie Trzaska played a through ball into the box where Sasha Stephens converted from inside the goal area at the 51:51 mark.
Penn went up 2-0 in the 77th minute as Paige Howard crossed a ball into the penalty area from the right side, and Mia Shenk knocked a shot into the top of the net from the edge of the goal area at 76:40.
Inside of the contest's final 10 minutes, Carchio, G'Bye, and freshman Lauren Hinton (Middletown, Conn.) all attempted shots before Penn closed out the game.
For the match, Penn led in shots (13-9), shots on goal (7-2), and corner kicks (7-4). Etzel totaled five saves while Penn goalie Kitty Qu finished with two stops. Carchio tied for the match lead with three shots.
