Junior Midfielder Connects on First Two Career Penalty Kick Attempts
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Abby Carchio tallied a career-high five points on two goals and an assist to lead Brown University women's soccer past Cornell University, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The Bears (6-7-1, 2-3-0 Ivy) came back from a 1-0 deficit early in the first half, scoring goals in the 40th, 52nd, and 89th minutes to rally past the visiting Big Red (1-11-1, 0-5-0 Ivy).
"We just told the team to be patient in the attack and try to really draw them out of the spaces," Brown head coach Kia McNeill said. "I was happy that we were able to have some good combination play in the final third to generate those chances. Today with the 3-5-2 it allowed us to generate more on the attack – get players into the attack a bit more – and that's why we were able to get the result."
Carchio (Lakeville, Mass.) converted a pair of penalty kicks, scoring two goals in a game for the second time this season and her career. She notched her third game-winning goal of the year and connected on her first two trips to the penalty spot as a collegiate player. She now has seven goals and 19 points on the season after entering this year with three goals and 12 points over her first two seasons combined.
Freshman Rebecca Rosen (Port Washington, N.Y.) netted her fourth goal of the season, tying the game at 1-1 in the first half off an assist from Carchio – her fifth helper of the year.
In Ivy League play, Rosen ranks third in the conference with three goals while Carchio leads the Ancient Eight with four assists and stands second in the league with eight points.
Brown sophomore goalkeeper Maria Guerrero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) made two saves – both in the second half – in the win (3-1-0).
The Bears earned an equalizer in the 40th minute as Carchio played a free kick from the left side into the penalty area where an oncoming Rosen knocked the ball into the back of the net at the 39:37 mark.
Brown went ahead 2-1 in the 52nd minute as Carchio connected on her first career penalty kick attempt, driving a shot into the right side of the goal. Freshman Maesyn G'Bye (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) drew the penalty at 51:33.
Carchio gave the Bears insurance in the 89th minute, stepping to the penalty spot and slotting a shot into the left side of the goal. Sophomore Star White (Norfolk, Va.) earned Brown the penalty at 88:41.
The Big Red took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute as Carolyn Ruoff served a corner kick from the left side that Evanthia Spyredes sent into the goal from the near post at the 10:08 mark.
The Bears generated opportunities throughout the match. A shot on goal from White in the 21st minute required a punch save before a shot from senior Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) forced a full-extension save in the 27th minute. G'Bye drove a threatening low shot on target in the 36th minute, and freshman Zoe Maxwell (Irvington, N.Y.) powered a shot off the crossbar in the 41st minute.
In the second half, freshman Sara Bermudez (South San Francisco, Calif.) threatened with a shot in the box in the 69th minute prior to Guerrero making a pair of saves in the 82nd and 88th minutes.
For the match, the Bears held advantages in shots (22-5), shots on goal (10-3), and corner kicks (5-4).
Cornell goalie Meghan Kennedy stopped seven shots in the loss (1-8-1).
Brown improved to 28-7-4 all-time vs. Cornell. The Bears moved to 9-0-1 in their last 10 match-ups with the Big Red.
Next, Brown plays its final away game of the year at the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 4:00 p.m. (ESPN+) at Rhodes Field.
