SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Freshman Katie Orona threw a complete game, and classmate Emily Springfield hit a two-run double in the top of the fifth to lead Brown University softball past Manhattan College, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at SCU Softball Field.

In the team's first game at the Santa Clara Round Robin, Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) did not allow an earned run over seven innings with five strikeouts to earn the win (3-0) for the Bears (3-3) over the Jaspers (6-5).

Orona garnered her third win in as many starts as the Bears played in their first game since March 1 due to weather conditions.

Springfield (Oceanside, Calif.) broke up a 1-1 tie with her two-run double in the fifth, and sophomore Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) added an RBI single in the top of the second to give Brown a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Sarah Syrop (Kennesaw, Ga.) set the table with a walk with one out in the top of the second. Springfield then moved Syrop over to second with a groundout before Schoenewald singled into right field to score Syrop with two outs.

The Jaspers tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth as Amanda Paxson hit a double to right field to bring home Elena Bowman from second base.

The Bears regained the lead in the next half inning as senior Trista Chavez (San Pedro, Calif.) started the inning with a walk. After Manhattan recorded two outs, Syrop walked to put runners on first and second. Springfield then doubled into center field to score both base runners.

Orona worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth and then faced just seven batters over the next two innings with the only base runner reaching on a wild pitch.

Briana Matazinsky (2-1) took the loss for the Jaspers, tossing seven innings and allowing three runs on five hits with one strikeout.

Next, Brown continues play at Santa Clara tomorrow with a game against the host Broncos (5:30 p.m. ET) and a second contest with the Jaspers (7:45 p.m. ET).
