
Softball Drops Decisions to Santa Clara, Manhattan

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Brown University softball fell to Santa Clara University, 6-0, and to Manhattan College, 8-0, on the second day of the Santa Clara Round Robin on Saturday afternoon at SCU Softball Field.
The Bears (3-5) dropped the decision to the host Broncos (9-21) in their first game of the day and second of the tournament before suffering their setback to the Jaspers (8-6). Brown beat Manhattan, 3-1, yesterday in its opener at the event.
Junior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) led the Bears with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate in game two against the Jaspers.
Next, Brown concludes play at the round robin tomorrow with a pair of games against UC Santa Barbara beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET.
Game 1 – Santa Clara 6, Brown 0
Senior Jessica Cherness (Torrance, Calif.) allowed four earned runs over six innings with two strikeouts, but Brown fell to host Santa Clara, 6-0, in its first game of the day.
Clara Gonzales (8-9) took the win for the Broncos, tossing a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits with two strikeouts over seven innings.
For Santa Clara, Ellie Fisher went 3-for-4 while Jenna Krummen notched two RBIs, two hits, and two runs scored.
Freshmen Yeram Park (Arcadia, Calif.) and Emily Springfield (Oceanside, Calif.), senior Trista Chavez (San Pedro Calif.), and sophomore Lauren Hanna (Milford, Mass.) each posted one hit for the Bears.
The Broncos plated the game's first two runs, both of which were unearned, on a pair of fielder's choices in the bottom of the third. Santa Clara pushed its lead to 4-0 in the next inning as Krummen hit an RBI triple to right center with two outs, and Kimbery Goulart followed with an RBI single to left field. In the bottom of the fifth, Jordan Newell hit a solo home run to left field.
The Bears threatened in the top of the sixth as Hanna reached base with one out on a bunt single. Park followed with a single to right field, and Leung moved the runners to second and third with a groundout before Gonzales got out of the jam.
Krummen added a solo homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth.
Game 2 – Manhattan 8, Brown 0
Leung enjoyed a 3-for-3 effort at the plate with a double, but Brown fell to Manhattan, 8-0, in the team's nightcap.
The Bears held the Jaspers to one run in the first five innings, but Manhattan opened the game up with six runs in the top of the sixth.
Amy Bright (5-3) earned the win for the Jaspers throwing a complete-game, four-hit shutout with two strikeouts.
Sophomore Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) took the loss for the Bears, giving up four earned runs on seven hits over five innings.
For Manhattan, Emily Cutler, Mickayla Romero, and Jenn Vazquez each went 2-for-4 while Amanda Paxson and Cutler each tallied two RBIs.
Manhattan plated its first run in the top of the fourth as Vazquez doubled to left center with two outs. Paxson then drove in Vazquez with a single to left field.
In the top of the sixth, the Jaspers loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of singles and a walk. Three runners came home on two hit by pitches and a walk before Cutler hit a two-run single, and Romero plated a run with an infield single. Manhattan tacked on an unearned run in the top of the seventh.
Freshman Annie McGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) singled to right field to open up the bottom of the seventh, but Bright held off the rally.
In relief, freshman pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) struck out five batters over two innings.
