CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior Janice Yang scored a goal late in the first period to bring Brown within 2-1, but Brown University women's ice hockey fell to No. 4 Harvard University, 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Bright-Landry Center.
The Bears (5-20-0, 2-16-0 ECAC) cut their deficit in half before the first intermission and threatened to pull within a goal again during the second period before the host Crimson (18-4-2, 14-3-1 ECAC) netted three goals in a two-minute span to pull ahead, 6-1.
Yang (Westport, Conn.) energized the visitors in the waning moments of the first period as she netted a goal with just over 48 seconds to play in the opening frame. On the counterattack, Yang skated onto a pass from sophomore Catherine LeBoeuf (Dieppe, New Brunswick) and slotted a shot into the goal.
Trailing 3-1, Brown threatened to score several times during a 5-on-3 power play, but the Crimson denied the Bears a tally while killing off a major penalty.
Harvard netted two goals inside of the contest's first three minutes to take a 2-0 edge before Brown killed off a pair of Crimson power play opportunities and scored a goal of their own to gain momentum heading into the first break. Mary Parker and Miye D'Oench posted the goals for the Crimson in the first.
The Crimson pulled ahead 3-1 just over two minutes into the second period on a marker from Karly Heffernan before taking a pair of penalties to setup Brown's 5-on-3 opportunity.
The hosts gained separation late in the second stanza, charting three goals in the last four minutes of the period. Parker netted two more goals during the streak while D'Oench recorded the other. Heffernan tacked on an insurance goal just over six minutes into the final period.
Harvard held a 46-14 advantage in shots on goal while Brown led 24-6 in blocked shots.
Harvard goalies Brianna Laing and Molly Tissenbaum recorded 11 and two saves respectively. Brown freshman goaltender Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) tallied 20 saves in two periods while sophomore Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) turned aside 19 shots in the third period.
Next, Brown returns home to Meehan Auditorium for games against Union (Feb. 13, 7 p.m.) and RPI (Feb. 14, 4 p.m.).
