PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Janice Yang and freshmen Sam Donovan and Katie Swanstrom each scored goals as Brown University women's ice hockey tied Union College, 3-3, in overtime on Friday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
The Bears (5-20-1, 2-16-1 ECAC) placed six shots on goal in the extra session, but the Dutchwomen (4-20-7, 1-14-4 ECAC) hung on for the draw after rallying from a 3-1 deficit in the third period.
Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) notched her 10th goal of the year just over 15 minutes into the first period, Yang (Westport, Conn.) tallied her sixth of the season early in the second, and Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) netted her first collegiate marker 2:23 into the final stanza.
Brown sophomore goaltender Monica Elvin (Oakland, Minn.) made 18 saves, including 12 in the third period, with two of her saves coming at point blank range midway through the third. Union's Shenae Lundberg stopped 27 shots.
After Union's Kathryn Tomaselli scored the game's first goal at the 8:57 mark of the first stanza, Donovan knotted the game at 1-1 with assists from senior Lauren Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) and junior Kelly Micholson (Elk Grove Village, Ill.).
On the play, Vella played the puck up to Donovan who carried it from the Bears' defensive to offensive zone. She then shot from the top of the left faceoff circle and beat Lundberg to the right side.
The Bears took a 2-1 lead 3:26 into the second as Yang tipped home a point shot from sophomore Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) after freshman Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) worked the puck over to her from right to left on the power play. At the edge of the crease, Yang deflected the shot top shelf.
Brown extended its advantage to 3-1 with just over 17 minutes to play as Katie Swanstrom fitted a shot into the goal from along the right goal line with helpers from senior Brittany Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.) and freshman Cynthia Kyin (Stokie, Ill.).
The Dutchwomen registered two goals in the game's final seven minutes to tie the game at 3-3. Christine Valente scored the visitor's first goal at the 13:27 mark before Jessica Kaminsky posted the game-tying tally just over two minutes later.
The Bears threatened to strike in overtime, particularly during their power play during the extra frame. Brown totaled eight shots while on the man advantage, putting three on goal, having four blocked, and pushing one wide.
Next, Brown hosts RPI tomorrow at 4 p.m.
