
Women's Basketball Falls at Manhattan, 80-56

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Freshman Erika Steeves totaled 15 points and seven rebounds, but Brown University women's basketball fell to Manhattan College, 80-56, on Sunday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium.
The Bears (5-1) pulled within 42-41 late in the third quarter before the host Jaspers (2-3) used a 17-2 run from the end of the third to early in the fourth to pull away from the visitors.
Steeves (Montreal, Quebec) shot 6-of-7 from the field and added three blocks in her fourth double-digit scoring game of the year. Junior Rebecca Musgrove (Plainview, N.Y.) scored 11 points – her third game this season in double figures. Freshman Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, Calif.) added nine points and six rebounds.
For Manhattan, Taylor Williams led all scorers with a career-high 25 points while Amani Tatum netted 17 points. Crystal Ross and Kayla Grimme grabbed 12 and 11 rebounds respectively.
Manhattan opened the game with a 7-1 edge and still led 14-6 before a fast-break layup from Musgrove and a wing 3-pointer from Mehta inside of the first quarter's final 40 seconds brought the Bears within 14-11 after one.
Brown took its first lead of the game at 18-17 with 7:02 to play in the second quarter behind a 12-3 run, which began in the first stanza. Steeves hit the Bears' first field goal in the second with a wing 3-pointer, and senior Ellise Sharpe (Tipp City, Ohio) closed the streak with a layup. The Jaspers outscored the visitors, 18-5, over the remainder of the period to take a 35-23 lead at halftime.
After the Jaspers pushed their lead to 38-23 just over a minute into the third quarter, the Bears scored 10 straight points to pull within 38-33 at the 5:30 mark. During the run, Mehta scored on a driving layup, senior Jordin Alexander (Fishers, Ind.) netted a second-chance basket, and Musgrove converted a fast-break layup off a feed from sophomore Janie White (Clarksville, Tenn.).
Brown pulled within 40-37 with 4:09 left in the third as Mehta made another layup to conclude a 14-2 spurt in which she netted six points. A Steeves left-handed lay-in cut the deficit to 42-41, but the Jaspers closed the frame on a 12-2 run in the last 2:21 to gain a 54-43 lead through three.
Manhattan captured a 59-43 advantage less than a minute into the fourth quarter on a 17-2 run. The Jaspers took their largest lead at 29 points on two occasions inside of the final 3:08.
Next, Brown returns home to the Pizzitola Sports Center to play contests against Rhode Island (Tuesday, Dec. 1, 7 p.m.) and Binghamton (Thursday, Dec. 3, 7 p.m.).
