Becky “Beck” Benson begins her first season as the head diving coach for the men’s and women’s Bears diving teams in 2023-2024. She was named the new head coach of the program after serving as the head men’s and women’s diving coach at the University of Chicago from 2018-2023.
In her first season leading the Brown Bears Men’s and Women’s Diving teams, Coach Beck produced two A finalists and two B finalists at the Women’s Ivy Championships, and she coached Rowland Lawver to a 2nd place finish on 1M and 4th place finish on 3M at the Men’s Ivy Championships. Additionally, two school records were broken, both Rowland Lawver and Isabella George broke the 3M records respectively. Seven divers competed at the NCAA Zone A qualifying meet.
While at Chicago, Benson produced 19 NCAA Championship qualifiers and 19 All-Americans. Her teams also produced the NCAA Regional champions on both 1M & 3M boards in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023. In 2022 her diver, Elizabeth Cron, became the first NCAA Diving National Champion in UChicago history, also earning her National Women’s Diver of the Year honors. Benson was named the National Coach of the Year twice in the 4 seasons she was at the helm of the UChicago program.
In Conference competition, Coach Beck produced the Conference Diver of the Year in 2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023; she was also named the Conference Coach of the Year for those years
Prior to arriving at UChicago, Coach Beck was the head coach at James Madison University from 2007-2016. While at JMU, Benson had two NCAA National Championship qualifiers (the first in program history), one NCAA Zone Champion (the first in program history), 10 Conference champions, 6 Conference Divers of the Year, 4 Conference Rookies of the Year, 23 NCAA Zone qualifiers, and she was a six-time Conference Coach of the Year.
Prior to James Madison, Coach Beck was the head coach at NC State University from 2006-2007. While with the Wolfpack, Benson had one male diver make the All-ACC team on the 1M, one female diver make the All-ACC team on tower, and 6 Zone qualifiers.
Benson was a diver at the University of South Carolina from 1982-1985. In her freshman season with the Gamecocks, she was the 3M Conference champion. As a sophomore, Benson was named the Conference Diver of the Year and was an NCAA semifinalist. Benson earned her degree in Sports Fitness Management, and has a Masters in Sport Administration.
