Downey began his career at Brown in the Fall of 2022 as a strength and conditioning coach working with Men’s Basketball, Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s Swim and Dive, and Equestrian programs.
Previous experience includes three years as the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. at Farleigh Dickinson, he oversaw a staff of five graduate assistants and 21 varsity teams. He created a partnership with Gatorade on a fueling station as well as coordinated the integration of the on-campus sport psychology department with athletics. Downey oversaw the completion of the Michael and Denise Clarke Strength and Conditioning Center, more than doubling the capacity of the previous training facility. In his stint, there were numerous playoff appearances across all sports as well as eight conference championship teams in the NEC, including an All-American triple jumper and training an athlete to go on to play professional basketball in the Ukrainian SuperLeague and B League in Japan.
Downey spent five years as the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning at Lafayette College. He directly oversaw Women’s Volleyball, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, and Men’s and Women’s Fencing. Downey assisted with all sports, managed the fueling station stock, and assisted with the 2015 redesign of the Maroon Club Varsity Weight Room. He also had a role as the men’s basketball mobility specialist and trained an athlete to play in the Ukrainian SuperLeague.
Downey was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey and graduated from Rutgers University in 2013 with a degree in Exercise Science Applied Kinesiology and a minor in Nutrition. In 2021, Downey received a Positive Coaching and Leadership degree from the University of Missouri. Downey is a Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach from the NSCA, as well as a Level 1 coach from USA Weightlifting, Crossfit Level 1, and Golf Fitness Specialist from the NASM.
